Divinyls' Singer Chrissy Amphlett Dies at Age 53

The Associated Press reports that Chrissy Amphlett of the group Divinyls has passed away at age 53. The Australian singer died at her home in New York City on Saturday, April 20 after a battle with breast cancer and multiple sclerosis.

Amphlett had a supporting role in the 1982 movie Monkey Grip and starred opposite Russell Crowe in the stage musical Blood Brothers in Australia in 1988. She also portrayed Judy Garland in the original touring production of The Boy from Oz.

Amphlett originated the group Divinyls in the early 1980s in Sydney along with Mark McEntee and Jeremy Paul. The band, which broke up in 1996, is best-known for their 1991 hit "I Touch Myself." Divinyls were inducted in the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2006, the same year they released a new album and embarked on a tour.

Crowe took to Twitter today to remember his co-star posting, "Dear Chrissie, The last time I saw you was in the Botanic Gardens, loving life and reciting verse. That's how I'll remember you, your boy, R."

The singer wed drummer Charley Drayton in 1999. Eight years later she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and in 2011 she revealed she was also suffering breast cancer.
