According to Deadline, IFC Films will release the new film Ophelia in the U.S., starring Daisy Ridley of Star Wars fame.
Ophelia is the Claire McCarthy-directed reimagining of Shakespeare's Hamlet, and also stars George MacKay, Naomi Watts, and Clive Owen. The film premiered at Sundance.
Set in medieval Denmark but spoken in contemporary voice, Ophelia presents the Shakespeare tragedy from the perspective of the young female character.
In the film, Ophelia is taken into Elsinore Castle, and becomes the lady-in-waiting to Queen Gertrude, before garnering the attention of Gertrude's son, Prince Hamlet, and love blossoms in secret. When Hamlet's father is murdered, the Prince seeks revenge, causing Ophelia to choose between her true love and her life.
