Deadline reports that Harry Reems, best known for his starring role in the 1972 pornographic film DEEP THROAT, has died at age 65 in Salt Lake City, Utah on Tuesday, March 19.
The actor began his career in Off-Off-Broadway plays before turning to adult films. He was originally hired as a lighting director for Deep Throat, but was given the lead role of Dr. Young when the actor who was originally cast failed to show up to the set.
The international hit went on to earn $600 million at the box office as well as a place in American film history. In 2005, the actor was featured in a documentary titled 'Inside Deep Throat'. His career took a controversial turn in 1976 when he was convicted on charges of conspiracy to transport obscene material across state lines. Lawyer Alan Dershowitz defended him and successfully had the conviction overturned the following year.
A recent film about Deep Throat actress Linda Lovelace debuted at this year's Sundance Film Festival. Adam Brody takes on the role of Reems in the film.
