New York State Senate Health Committee Chair Kemp Hannon and Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano will join Sex and the City Star and breast cancer Survivor Cynthia Nixon as well as over 500 breast cancer survivors, support groups, and health officials on Monday, September 30, 2013 at the Third Annual Breast Cancer Summit. Cynthia Nixon will be speaking about her personal experience and battle with breast cancer. They will be honoring her with a lifetime achievement award for her advocacy and dedication to raising awareness. The event will begin at 11:00 am at The Coral House on 70 Milburn Avenue in Baldwin. Speakers will outline the latest innovations, treatments and services for women with breast cancer, specifically focusing on patient education. Aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States.
Rates of breast cancer on Long Island are among the highest in the state of New York, with an average annual incidence of 116.9 per 100,000 women (compared to the statewide average of 104.1 per 100,000 women). There are 2.5 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States.
