Vega Baby announced today the acquisition of all North American rights to the gritty New York-set crime film THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT directed by Henry Barrial. Written by acclaimed writer Joseph Vasquez ('Hangin' with the Homeboys'), it stars E.J. Bonilla, Melissa Fumero, Saundra Santiago and Leo Minaya. Produced by Sam Kitt, Michael Lieber, Hitesh Patel and Mark Stolaroff, the film has a day and date release set for November 6, 2015.
THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT has received extensive accolades, including Best Director and the Audience Award at the Queens World Film Festival 2014, as well as nominations for Best Feature, Director and Screenplay at the Phoenix Film Festival. It was also an official selection at the Los Angeles,
NASHVILLE and St. Louis International Film Festivals.
In the film, Jack Maldonado (Bonilla) is a hot-blooded, ambitious young man who, fueled by misguided nostalgia, buys a small apartment building in the Bronx and moves his boisterous family into the apartments to live rent-free. Tension quickly builds as Jack imposes his views on everyone around him, including his fiancée, Lily (Fumero). All the while, he hides the fact that his corner store is a front for selling marijuana, but soon has to deal with new unwanted competition. It's only a matter of time before Jack's family and 'business' lives collide in tragic fashion.
The deal for the rights was brokered by attorney Dawn Botti on behalf of the filmmakers.
"I'm a huge fan of 'Hangin with the Homeboys' and the work of Joseph Vasquez, so it's a real privilege to be associated with his final script which is an extremely personal story that plays like the dramatic, violent flip side to the comedy of 'Homeboys.' Director Henry Barrial is a gifted filmmaker who has truly honored Vasquez' screenplay with a film that is honest, touching, funny and sometimes brutal," commented Vega Baby President/CEO Adam Ripp.
