The Freshman Class: Santa Cruz - Premiering Tuesday, March 11th at 8pmET/5pmPT
Four new aspiring chefs head to culinary school in the docu-series The Freshman Class: Santa Cruz. Based in beautiful Santa Cruz, California at Cabrillo College's Culinary Arts and Hospitality program, these four freshmen attempt to change their lives and achieve their dreams at one of the most demanding and fast-paced programs in America. Follow the students over eight episodes, chronicling their personal lives through difficult relationships and family conflict, to homelessness and even life-threatening illness, as they take on big challenges while going through significant personal trials outside the classroom. Culinary school is difficult and offers no guarantees, and these students all desperately want to do well in the program to better their lives, but can they make it?
The new students arrive in California at Cabrillo College's Culinary Arts and Hospitality program. Gabriel is a former gang member looking to turn his life around after a recent stint in prison. Amalia is a stay-at-home mom of four, eager to take on new responsibilities but nervous about accepting a role other than wife and mother. Kim regrets dropping out of culinary school decades ago and is ready to prove herself, despite her reluctant husband, and Jim is a Navy veteran, suffering a terrible injury that left him jobless and homeless eight years ago. The students get right to work with their first catering class assignment, leading to a conflict between Jim and his professor. Will they succeed and be one step closer to fulfilling their dream?
Kim has her first shot at showing her skills when she is tapped to be Head Chef in the school's student-run restaurant, despite having no professional culinary experience. Meanwhile, Gabriel's home life interferes with his classes and threatens his chances of staying in school. After a conflict with his catering professor, Jim questions his future at culinary school.
New student Matt reveals a life-threatening illness that could destroy his culinary dreams, while Jim makes a final decision about his future at culinary school. When an unexpected catering assignment pops up, Amalia has to swallow her emotions and lean on her teenage daughter for help.
