Claire Denis to Become First Woman to Receive Stockholm Film Festival's Lifetime Achievement Award

Variety reports that contemporary French filmmaker Claire Denis will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement award next month at the 2013 Stockholm film festival. Denis will join past honorees Jean-Luc Godard and Quentin Tarantino. She is the first woman to receive the award.

"Claire Denis refuses to close her eyes to the creative and destructive force unleashed by human weaknesses. A bold explorer of post-colonial Africa and the dark corners of modern society, who invites the audience to an exposed universe that is beautiful and raw," said the jury. "This year's Lifetime Achievement Award goes to a filmmaker who continues to seek what others turn away from, always fearless and with a rare eye for visual poetry."

Denis has directed more than 20 films, including Chocolat, Nenette and Boni, Beau Travail, Every Day, L'Intrus, 35 Shots of Rum, White Material and more.

Her latest feature, Bastards, is being distributed by Sundance Selects. Bastards (Les salauds, 2013), which recently premiered at the New York Film Festival, is Denis's first digitally shot film (by the great cinematographer and frequent Denis collaborator Agnes Godard), a contemporary film noir and savage revenge drama, starring Vincent Lindon, Chiara Mastroianni, and Julie Bataille.

The festival runs November 6-17, 2013 in Sweden.
