The Chemotherapy Foundation, a not-for-profit organization providing critical start-up SEED money grants for innovative cancer research projects, is celebrating 50 years of research and discovery by hosting its 2018 Innovation Gala on Wednesday, November 7th at The Russian Tea Room in New York City. Media personality Valerie Smaldone will emcee the event which will honor Pierce Brosnan (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, The Son), actor, producer, and philanthropist, with the Humanitarian Award; renowned Oncologist Malcolm Pike will receive the Ezra Greenspan Award, and Journalist Marvin Scott will accept the Chemotherapy Foundation Appreciation Award. Dr. Eric Manheimer, author of Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital and the inspiration behind NBC's hit series New Amsterdam, will participate in a Q&A session. The program will include a look back at some of the foundation's most notable achievements and discovery in a special video tribute as well as a cocktail reception and sit-down dinner.

In addition to celebrating the Chemotherapy Foundation's golden anniversary, the evening will be the backdrop for a very interesting and unique "James Bond" reunion. Brosnan, the sixth James Bond, will reunite with his Tomorrow Never Dies Director Roger Spottiswoode and Amy and Erin Epstein of The Lynne Cohen Foundation. The Epsteins are the daughters of Lynne Cohen, a close friend of Brosnan's who died of ovarian cancer soon after Tomorrow Never Dies was released. To honor his friend's legacy, Brosnan turned his first two Bond premieres into fundraisers for her foundation.

"For over 50 years, The Chemotherapy Foundation has not wavered on empowering ongoing progress in the fight against cancer," said Dr. Franco M. Muggia, Chairman and Medical Director. "We are proud to continue Dr. Ezra Greenspan's belief that key moments of real medical progress occur at the juncture of Science and patient care."

"I have seen firsthand the suffering and devastation of lives lost to cancer. And I have also witnessed the dedication and commitment of the men and women whom we honor this evening in the fight against cancer. It is with the deepest of gratitude that I accept the Humanitarian Award on behalf of my late wife Cassandra and my stepdaughter Charlotte whose lives were cut short by ovarian cancer. It is an honor for me and my family to support Dr. Muggia and to take part in the 50th Anniversary of the Chemotherapy Foundation," said Brosnan.

In 1968, Dr. Greenspan launched The Chemotherapy Foundation to fund innovative cancer research and served as its Chairman and Medical Director for over three decades. Four years later, he founded the Chemotherapy Foundation Symposium, the educational arm of The Chemotherapy Foundation, to provide a forum for clinical investigators to present studies of new chemotherapy agents proving elective in the treatment of cancer. With remarkable prescience, he named the first Continuing Medical Education (CME) conference the Immunotherapy of Cancer Conference. Now a leading global conference for the profession, it provides a forum for clinical investigators to present studies of new chemotherapy agents proving effective in the treatment of cancer.

Today, The Foundation still remains dedicated to providing crucial SEED money to gifted researchers to start groundbreaking work aimed at a specific therapeutic goal. This program is unique in that it allows synergy between basic research and clinical science.
