The Associated Press reports that Cee Lo Green has recorded a new theme song for the NFL's Thursday Night Football. The 'Voice' judge will release the new track titled 'I Love Football' in conjunction with the Thursday Night Football premiere on September 13. The season opener will see the Green Bay Packers pitted against the Chicago Bears.
In addition, it was announced that fans are invited to submit videos of themselves singing sections of 'I Love Football'. The winners selected will be featured in the official video for the track. Fans can submit their entries by clicking here. NFL network's BrIan Lockhart commented that the new 'Fanthem' campaign will enable fans to become more involved in each game.
'I Love Football' is based on the classic Ramones tune 'Blitzkrieg Bop'. Green told The AP that he has long wanted to pay homage to the pioneering punk band. "I'm definitely a Ramones fan. Punk rock is like pots and pans, like making something out of nothing, which is what hip-hop is as well," he explained. "And both of them early on in their humble beginnings were alternative music.
He continued, "Therefore it's an alternative to the Faith Hill rendition [of the NFL theme], the Hank Williams rendition and any other one that we'll co-exist with. I talk like a politician but I'm a punk at heart."
Green returns to NBC's THE VOICE along with fellow judges Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton on Monday, September 10.
