Launched in 2012, CINE's Film Scoring CONTEST for Emerging Composers was renamed in 2014 after legendary composer Marvin Hamlisch. Over 600 composers from 57 countries participated in the 2016 contest, in which emerging and youth composers were given a CINE award-winning short film to re-score. 10 finalists in each category were named in May, and a distinguished jury selected each category's winner and runners-up: Academy Award-winning composer Mychael Danna (Best Original Score, Life of Pi, 2012); multiple BMI-award-winning composer and Emmy nominee George S. Clinton; and Emmy Award-winning music editor, supervisor and conductor Daniel Carlin (Chair of Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television at USC's Thornton School of Music) in the Emerging category; and composer and music supervisor Ronald Sadoff, Director of Programs in Film Scoring and Songwriting at NYU Steinhardt; composer Alison Plante, chair of Film Scoring at Berklee College of Music; and Vasco Hexel, composer, conductor, arranger and area leader in the Composition for Screen program at the Royal College of Music in the Youth category.
Contest winners Robert Neumair and Lawson Madlener will be presented with the Marvin Hamlisch Award by Terre Blair Hamlisch at CINE Celebrates: New York on November 18, 2016. Over $10,000 worth of prizes will be presented to the CONTEST winners and runners-up courtesy of CONTEST sponsors 8dio, MOTU, MakeMusic, Embertone, Soundiron, Orange Tree Samples and scoreAscore.
