48 HOURS: "The Sober Truth" was Saturday's #1 broadcast at 10:00 PM with viewers and adults 25-54, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Jan. 2.
48 HOURS (R) delivered 4.08 million viewers and a 1.1/03 with adults 25-54 (tied with NBC). Compared to the last regularly scheduled episode (on Dec. 19, 2015),
48 HOURS was up +10% in adults 25-54 (from 1.0/03) and added +320,000 viewers (+9%, from 3.76m).
Saturday's broadcast featured Maureen Maher and 48 HOURS' investigation into the death of Karla Mendez Brada, who while struggling with addiction sought help in an Alcoholics Anonymous program in California. While in recovery, she met a man and fell in love with her killer.
Brada was found bruised and battered in her bedroom on Sept. 1, 2011 after her boyfriend, Eric Earle, called police to say he found her dead. Earle, who had a criminal past, told police he didn't know what happened, but said the bruises could have been from a fall he said she took overnight while carrying laundry down a staircase. Police didn't buy his story.
Maher reported on how attending meetings that would change Brada's life, ultimately led to the end of her life. Maher also examined how judges around the country sentence some criminals to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, and that AA's own non-disclosure guidelines put them side-by-side to those who are vulnerable in recovery.
