CBS Sports Network will air live coverage of big wave surfing's Puerto Escondido Challenge beginning June 24 at 10am EDT with continuing coverage on Saturday, June 25, at 10:30 am EDT. With swells in excess of 30 feet heading for the region, this is the first WSL Big Wave event to ever be called "on" at this legendary surf break, and is the first Big Wave Tour event of the season.
Mainland Mexico's Puerto Escondido is home to some of the most unpredictable and monstrous waves on earth. With a volatile sandbar bottom, this break requires technical mastery, extreme physical endurance, and a wealth of courage from all who attempt the challenge.
The Puerto Escondido Challenge will be contested by big wave icons including 2015/2016 BWT Champion Greg Long (USA), 2015/2016 BWT runner-up Makuakai Rothman (HAW) and Billy Kemper (HAW), as they compete among a field of 24 big wave riders.
Fans can tune in to the World Surf League's Dawn Patrol, which will set the stage for the event, beginning at 8:30 am EDT/5:30 am PDT. Dawn Patrol is available anywhere in the world via the WSL's website www.worldsurfleague.com or its free mobile app available on Google Play and the iTunes store. In addition, the WSL will be streaming the first heat of the competition on Facebook LIVE to its millions of fans around the globe.
CBS Sports Network's coverage will run both days until 1pm Eastern, after which fans can continue watching on the WSL website and app.
The competition will kick-off with four heats of six athletes per heat, with the top three finishers from each advancing to the semi-finals. There will be two rounds of semi-final action, with the top three again advancing to the single final heat which will determine the champion (for more details, visit the Big Wave section of the World Surf League's website).
