ON THE ROAD the storied CBS News franchise that began with legendary newsman Charles Kuralt and continues today with CBS News correspondent Steve Hartman, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. To mark the historic milestone, CBS News is delivering multi-platform original reporting, featuring archival footage and behind-the-scenes interviews, on the CBS EVENING NEWS (6:30-7:00 PM, ET), CBS SUNDAY MORNING (9:00 AM, ET), CBSN, CBS News' 24/7 streaming news service, and on CBSNews.com.
"On the Road" is one of the longest-running and most successful franchises in television news history. Charles Kuralt set out to see the country in October 1967 and spent much of his career "On the Road," logging more than a million miles by traveling across America in a motor home. The Kuralt series was broadcast on more than 600 editions of the "CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite" throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Hartman reimagined "On the Road" in 2011, and since then, he has captured the spirit of America with his own version of the series every Friday on the
CBS EVENING NEWS, with extended versions of those stories often airing on
CBS SUNDAY MORNING.

CBS News is showcasing those stories and archival footage all week online and on its social media platforms, in addition to interviews with Hartman and his "On the Road" team.

Additionally, tomorrow's
CBS EVENNG NEWS "On the Road" segment will feature an interview with Izzy Bleckman, Kuralt's cameraman. Hartman will also look back on some of Kuralt's signature stories.
CBS SUNDAY MORNING will air an extended version on Oct. 29.
Most of Hartman's "On the Road" stories become viral internet sensations, garnering millions of views. Some of his most popular features include the bookish football star; two strangers who became a match made in heaven when they met after a liver transplant; and a story about a Gold Star kid who turned a $20 bill into millions of dollars raised for military families. Hartman says the story people ask him about more than any other is a personal one about his father and the selling of his childhood home.
