CBS News Radio announced today that it will launch nationwide THE TAKEOUT, a weekly, one-hour program about politics, policy and pop culture hosted by CBS News chief White House correspondent Major Garrett and CBS News political director Steve Chaggaris. The first episode will air Friday, Oct. 20.
Listeners across the country can expect context and analysis of the week's political news in a casual format that allows for expanded conversation with a newsmaker. Each episode is recorded over a meal at a Washington, D.C. restaurant, adding flavor and texture to the program. Recent guests include Mick Mulvaney, director of the Office of Management and Budget; Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT); Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN); Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX); Sen. Al Franken (D-MN); Carly Fiorina; Gov. Martin O'Malley (D-MD); Corey Lewandowski; and comedian Samantha Bee.
This week, Garrett and Chaggaris interview Secretary of Energy Rick Perry.
"'The Takeout' breaks the mold of news/talk programming," said Craig Swagler, General Manager of
CBS News Radio. "It's a one-of-a-kind experience that gives
THE LISTENER a seat at the table with two great journalists and notable guests, chewing on the latest issues of the day."
"I open every show the same way - 'Welcome to the very best part of my broadcast week,'" said Garrett. "'The Takeout' is a dream come true for me. It's a show Steve and I created so we could listen to, learn about and travel the ideological roads of American politics. 'The Takeout' is a conversation, not an interrogation. And we edit nothing. Our guests never have to fidget about context. They are heard fully. We discuss news of the week and try to translate Beltway buzzwords so America can join the conversation. I never stop learning from and enjoying this humble audio odyssey."
"Major and I are honored and excited to be taking 'The Takeout' to the historic and venerable
CBS News Radio network, extending our conversations to new audiences," said Chaggaris. "Our discussions take place where most Americans talk about politics: around the table, over a meal. And while we're usually eating at a restaurant, we hope our listeners will 'take out' some news, knowledge and fun from our weekly interviews."
"The Takeout" launches Friday night at 9:00 PM, CT on powerhouse KMOX-AM St. Louis, Mo. and will be heard Saturdays and Sundays on WCCO-AM Minneapolis, Minn.; WTMJ-AM Milwaukee, Wisc.; KXNT-AM Las Vegas, Nev.; WECK-AM in Buffalo, N.Y.; and WJJF-FM in Montauk, N.Y.
Arden Farhi and Katiana Krawchenko are the producers of "The Takeout" podcast.
