CBS News Delivers Powerful Performances with Key Demos & Viewers

CBS News' evening, primetime and morning news broadcasts delivered powerful performances with adults 25-54 - the demographic that matters most to those who advertise in news - and viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for the week ending May 31.

Each of CBS News' programs - CBS THIS MORNING, FACE THE NATION, CBS SUNDAY MORNING WITH CHARLES OSGOOD, CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY, 48 HOURS and CBS THIS MORNING: SATURDAY - delivered impressive results with key news demos and viewers.

Schieffer's farewell broadcast as anchor of FACE THE NATION was Sunday's #1 public affairs broadcast, watched by nearly 4 million viewers, generating the program's best audience delivery since January. CBS THIS MORNING delivered the network's best competitive position with NBC in the time period in nearly 21 years. And CBS SUNDAY MORNING posted a +16% year-to-year increase in viewers and maintained its dominance as the #1 Sunday morning newscast with adults 25-54 and viewers.

CBS News' the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY was up +6% in viewers, while 60 MINUTES and two editions of 48 HOURS attracted considerable audiences in their respective time periods.

CBS News broadcasts featured such original reporting as Bob Schieffer's interview with possible presidential candidate Jeb Bush; Don Dahler's reports on flooding in Texas; Dean Reynolds report on the impact a fishing tournament in Havana, Cuba has on America-Cuba relations; Erin Moriarty's investigation into a Florida murder and a man's quest to prove he was wrongly convicted; Kris Van Cleave's inside look the TSA's airport program to use facial recognition to identify passengers; and Anthony Mason's profile of Jerry Seinfeld.

Here's a recap of how CBS News broadcasts did last week:
The CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY was up +6% year-to-year in viewers (6.42m from 6.08m) for the week ending May 29. The CBS broadcast added +339,000 viewers and closed the viewership gap with NBC by 780,000 viewers compared to the same week last year.

60 MINUTES (R) was the #1 broadcast with adults 25-54 and viewers Sunday at 7:00 PM. The broadcast delivered 8.26 million viewers and a 1.4/05 with adults 25-54.

FACE THE NATION was #1 Sunday morning public affairs program, finishing first in viewers (3.95m) and tied for first in adults 25-54 (0.7/04) on May 31. The broadcast beat its closest competitor by more than a million viewers. FACE THE NATION posted its largest audience since Jan. 18, 2015. Editor's Note: FACE THE NATION's second half-hour was broadcast contiguously across 76.3% of the CBS affiliates.

CBS THIS MORNING was the only network morning news broadcast to post increases in adults 25-54 (+29%, 0.9/07 from 0.7/06), viewers (+17%, 3.50m from 2.99m), and women 18-49 (+40%, 0.7/06 from 0.5/04) compared to last year. CBS THIS MORNING added +510,000 viewers year-to-year, giving the network its closest competitive position with NBC in the time period in nearly 21 years (since the week ending August 19, 1994).

CBS SUNDAY MORNING WITH CHARLES OSGOOD was the #1 Sunday morning news program with adults 25-54 and viewers for May 31. CBS SUNDAY MORNING posted a +16% year-to-year gain in viewers (6.03m from 5.20m) and even in adults 25-54.

48 HOURS delivered 4.02 million viewers and a 0.8/03 with adults 25-54 for May 30, 2015. 48 HOURS: Tuesday (R) delivered 5.62 million viewers and a 1.3/04 with adults 25-54. The Tuesday premiere of the first of five 48 HOURS Tuesdays improved the time period performance by +7% in viewers compared to the same night a year ago (PERSON OF INTEREST (R)).

CBS THIS MORNING: SATURDAY was the only Saturday morning network news broadcast to post year-to-year gains in viewers (+3%, 2.03m from 1.97m) on Saturday, May 30. Television year-to-date, CBS THIS MORNING: SATURDAY is the only Saturday morning newscast to post year-to-year gains in adults 25-54 (+20%, 0.6/04 from 0.5/04) and viewers (2.11m from 1.95m).
