CBS News correspondent David Begnaud, who was in Puerto Rico before, during and after Hurricane Maria devastated the region, is back on the ground there and reporting on new questions about the death toll from the storm for all CBS News platforms. Begnaud began his reporting from Puerto Rico Tuesday onCBSN, CBS News' 24/7 digital streaming news network, and will continue reporting there today.
Begnaud reported on CBS THIS MORNING about a new study from Harvard University that suggests the death toll from the storm is more than 4,600 people, which contrasts with the U.S. government's official report of 64 dead. To watch Begnaud's CTM report, click here.
"Here's why this story is about more than just a shocking number. Every time a government official certifies that a death has been directly related to Hurricane Maria, THE FAMILY of the person who died is then eligible for the federal government to help pay for funeral expenses," reported Begnaud.
On Tuesday, Begnaud reported on the release of the survey for CBSN. To watch Begnaud's CBSN report, click here.
Begnaud spent nearly two months in Puerto Rico reporting on Hurricane Maria and the aftermath of the storm on the people who live there, the U.S. response and how local government responded. His work there earned him a prestigious George Polk Award for Public Service.
