CBS News Announces Bob Schieffer to Contribute Political Commentary to CAMPAIGN 2016

Veteran newsman Bob Schieffer will bring his keen perspective and political insights back to CBS News as an occasional contributor throughout Campaign 2016, it was announced today by CBS News President David Rhodes.

Schieffer, who retired from CBS in 2015 as Chief Washington Correspondent, will appear on CBS News programs through the 2017 Inauguration.

"This is a momentous presidential election year and we've assembled a great team to cover it," said Rhodes. "Having Bob's insights available throughout the political season will boost the strong CBS News team and benefit our viewers."

"I'm flattered and delighted to offer thoughts on this campaign," Schieffer said. "It's certainly one of the most unusual of my lifetime."

The new role marks Schieffer's return to television after stepping away as Chief Washington Correspondent and anchor of FACE THE NATION in June 2015 after a 24-year run in that seat. He has been a reporter for more than half a century, and in 2015 marked his 46th year at CBS News. Prior to joining CBS in 1969 he was a reporter at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, where he was the first reporter from a Texas newspaper to report from Vietnam.

Schieffer has won virtually every award in broadcast journalism including eight Emmys, the overseas Press Club Award, the Paul White Award presented by the TV News Directors Association, the Edward R. Murrow Award, and in 2008 was named a living legend by the Library of Congress. In 2013, Schieffer was inducted into the National Academy of Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame.

Schieffer became the Network's Chief Washington Correspondent in 1982 and was named the anchor and moderator of FACE THE NATION in 1991. In addition, he anchored the Saturday edition of the CBS EVENING NEWS for 23 years. In March 2005, Schieffer served as interim anchor of the CBS EVENING NEWS until August 2006.

Since retiring, Schieffer has served as the Walter Shorenstein Media and Democracy Fellow at the Shorenstein Center at Harvard University's KENNEDY School and remains active at the Bob Schieffer College of Communication at Texas Christian University.
