According to Variety, Brie Larson is in talks to play Billie Jean King in the upcoming tennis movie BATTLE OF THE SEXES, after Emma Stone departed the project due to scheduling conflicts.
Steve Carell is still attached to the film, starring as Bobby Riggs.
Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris from a script by Simon Beaufoy (with cooperation from King), BATTLE OF THE SEXES is aiming for a 2016 release.
Deadline previously described the project as "a comedy with dramatic and political overtones" and a "quirky warm and engaging" retelling of King and Riggs' match in 1973, when 29-year-old tennis star King beat 55-year-old former Wimbledon champion Riggs. "King and Riggs became the representatives for their gender, even though each was a complicated person trying to figure out their place in the world," Deadline wrote.
Larson's ROOM just debuted in Toronto. She will soon appear in KONG: SKULL ISLAND and FREE FIRE. Among her past credits are SHORT TERM 12, TRAINWRECK, DON JON, THE SPECTACULAR NOW, 21 JUMP STREET, the TV series THE UNITED STATES OF TARA and more.
