Books-A-Million, Inc. (NASDAQ:BAMM), released today a list of books that are being adapted for the big screen as a way to help their customers learn about, and become excited to see, movies coming in the months ahead.
Recently, the pages of such books as 'The Fault in Our Stars' by John Green and, 'Heaven is For Real' by Todd Burpo, and 'Divergent' by Veronica Roth all have made the leap from the page to the screen. "Reading the book before seeing the movie makes the movie more enjoyable," said Margaret Terwey, Senior Fiction Buyer. "Characters and storylines are often much more developed in the book, which helps make a movie more meaningful. Plus, it's fun to see if the characters and places in the book are depicted in the movie as you pictured them in your head," she stated.
Some upcoming page-to-screen movies are:
'The Hundred Foot Journey' (Release date 8/8/14) is the story of a chef from humble beginnings in Mumbai who moves with his family to Paris where he conquers the world of French haute cuisine. The film adaptation features Helen Mirren and Om Puri, who has long been a fixture in mainstream Indian movies, Independent films and art films. Producers include Stephen Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey.
'The Giver' (Release date 8/15/14) is based Lois Lowry's 1993 Newbery Award Winning children's novel about a utopian society without war, suffering, pain, difference or choice. One boy, Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) is chosen to learn from the Giver (Jeff Bridges) to experience the sensations of the real world. Other members of the cast include Taylor Swift, Katie Holmes and Meryl Streep.
'If I Stay' (Release date 8/22/14) will make you stop and evaluate your life. Based on the critically acclaimed novel of the same name, the movie takes you along as Mia, a shy 17-year-old cellist who, following an automobile crash, has an outer body experience. While in a coma, she watches as friends and family gather at her bedside and has to decide whether she wants to live a life far different than she imagined, or slip away and die. Be sure to bring tissues.
Gillian Flynn is the New York Times #1 best-selling author with two titles coming to the big screen this fall. The first is 'Dark Places' (Release date 9/1/14) starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Corey Stoll, Charlize Theron and Christina Hendricks. This thriller follows Libby Day (Theron) as she searches for the killer of her mother and two sisters from twenty-five years earlier. The second is 'Gone Girl' (Release date 10/13/14). An all-star cast, including Rosamund Pike, Ben Affleck, Missi Pyle, Neil Patrick Harris, Sela Ward, and Tyler Perry, bring this best selling novel to the screen. Amy Dunne (Pike) disappears on her fifth wedding anniversary and her husband Nick's (Affleck) strange and erratic behavior makes him a suspect, but did he do it? Read the book, and watch the movie to find out.
With all the deep, dark stories set to roll in theaters, it's good to have one that adds a little levity and makes you laugh out loud. One such title is 'This is Where I Leave You' (Release date 9/12/14) by Jonathan Tropper. This riotously funny story with Jason Bateman is about four siblings who are summoned home and forced to live under one roof for the first time in years to mourn the death of their father. The visit spins out of control with dysfunctional relationships, old grudges, revealed secrets and a surprise ending that has everyone talking.
'Maze Runner' (Release date 9/19/14) is perfect for fans of The Hunger Games series. The story begins as Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) is dropped off in a rural community of boys after his memory has been erased. He soon learns they're all trapped in a maze and must work together to escape. Follow the thrilling action and danger at every turn.
Coming into the holiday season are two must see movies. First, is 'Wild' (Release date 12/5/14). This memoir by Cheryl Strayed is the inspirational story of one woman's 1,100-mile solo hike on the Pacific Crest Trail - from the Mojave Desert to the forests of Washington State - to recover from recent events in her life. Reese Witherspoon plays Cheryl as she faces dangerous wildlife, extreme weather and solitude to piece her life back together.
And finally, coming out on Christmas Day is 'Unbroken' (Release date 12/25/14) by Laura Hillenbrand. Louis Zamperini (Jack O'Connell) was a larger than life character who died at the age of 97 on July 2, 2014. From humble beginnings and incorrigibly delinquent as a teenager, he became an exceptional runner who competed in the Berlin Olympics. He becomes an airman at the beginning of World War II and in May 1943, his bomber crashes into the Pacific. He survives, and for the next 47 days drifts over 2,000 miles about the Pacific in a small raft - only to be rescued by the Japanese and thrown into a series of brutal prison camps where he stays for over two years. Yet, he again survives. This is a story of unbridled optimism, faith, resilience and ultimately redemption. The screenplay has been adapted by Joel and Ethan Cohen and Angelina Jolie serves as the director.
