His self-titled debut album earned him two Top 10 hits in Mexico and achieved Gold status in Chile and Brazil. He then transitioned into U.S. television with roles on "Beverly Hills 90210" and "Pretty Little Liars," among many others. His true rise to fame came in 2012 when he starred opposite Tom Cruise in New Line's adaptation of the musical "Rock of Ages," which earned him both the Cinemacon's "Rising Star of the Year" award and an Alma Award for best actor. He was named one of L.A. Times "Faces to Watch" in 2014, and was featured in Bruce Weber's new "Rising Star" campaign that same year. Most recently Boneta was part of the FOX horror-comedy series "Scream Queens," co-starring Emma Roberts, as well as Imagine Entertainment's "Pelé: Birth of a Legend," opposite Vincent D'Onofrio and Rodrigo Santoro.
