The Hollywood Reporter reveals today that Angela Bassett will join Precious star Paula Patton in wedding-themed film, Jumping the Broom.  The comedy will be directed by Salim Akil under the Columbia banner. Laz Alonso, Loretta Devine and Romeo Miller round out the cast. Filming begins in Canada next month.

The film centers on the meeting of two black families - one weathly, one not - at a wedding in Martha's Vineyard.  Bishop T.D. Jakes, Curtis Wallace, Tracey Edmonds, Glendon Palmer and Elizabeth Hunter produce the film, which was penned by Arlene Gibbs, currently being editedby Elizabeth Hunter.

According to the report, Bassett will play the role of a wealthy Washington wife and heiress.  Patton plays her daughter, Alonso her lover, and Miller her Yale educated cousin.

Bassett starred on Broadway in the original production of Joe Turner's Come and Gone.  FIlm credits include What's Love Got to Do with It, Malcolm X, Panther, and The Rosa Parks Story.  She starred as Michael Jackson's mother Katherine in the miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream, and as Christopher Wallace's mother Voletta Wallace in the film Notorious. She recently finished filming on Green Lantern and will make her directorial debut with United States filming this fall.
