Ollie (aka ARROW, played by Stephen Amell) and Diggle (David Ramsey) counter to knock heads, meta-humans call Star City home and Laurel (aka Black Canary, played by Katie Cassidy) and Thea (aka Speedy, played by Willa Holland) head to Nanda Parbat to resurrect Laurel's dead sis Sara (Caity Lotz) only to find opposition to their plan from an unlikely person. Keep your eye on the target and your quiver full, we'll get you caught up.
We open on Diggle chasing three bad guys with remote assist from Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards), natch. One of the bad guys gets the drop on Diggle, knocking him down. He points his gun at Diggle...and then runs away. ARROW makes a spectacular entrance on a motorbike, leaping over some logs...and then promptly hits a land mine and is thrown from the bike. Felicity is able to take remote control of a crane, blocking one of the bad guys from exiting. Diggle knocks him down and knocks out his tooth before he can break the cynide capsule. The guy shocks Diggle and then runs off.
Back on Nanda Parbat, Nyssa (Katrina Law) and Malcolm Meryln (played by Broadway and West End theatre vet John Barrowman) are sparring. Well, she's actually trying to kill him, but he's just having fun. She nicks his throat before he disarms her, then dips his hand into the Lazarus Pit and splashes a bit of its waters on the open wound. It immediately seals.
Thea and Laurel arrive. Nyssa refers to Thea as "sister-in-law" so I guess she thinks she's still married to Ollie (sham wedding happened last season). Laurel doesn't waste any time: "I want you to bring my sister back to life."
Both Merlyn and Nyssa try to dissuade Laurel. The pit is used to heal, yes. Resurrect? That's a different story. There's no telling who or what would emerge from its healing waters. So, the answer is no.
Back at the compound, Felicity thinks the original Team ARROW trio should go out for margaritas. Diggle declines as he has a family to get back to (you know, Ollie. The family you put in grave danger last season and Diggle still hasn't forgiven you).
Flashback #1: on the island where people are being forced to harvest poppies for opium, Ollie patrols the grounds. One of the women says a disparaging remark about the spoiled rich kid (Ollie) ordering people around. A guy tries to escape. Ollie tackles him, but another guard is not so easy and hits him with the butt of his rifle.
Diggle returns home to find the door ajar. He immediately draws his gun to find an A.R..G.U.S agent in his living room. He's there to deliver some intel that Diggle's wife asked for when she was still with the agency. The person who hired the hit on Diggle's brother is named Mina Fayad (Carmen Moore). She just happens to have flown in last night. This all is coming together so quickly, it's either lazy writing or a set up.
Cue Fayad visiting Damien Darhk. She's brought a friend. Jeremy Tell (aka Double Down, played by TEEN WOLF's JR Bourne). Darhk asks for a demonstration of Double D's skills. He sends three playing cards into the chest of the guy that escaped from Diggle, killing him. Darhk is impressed and hires him to kill Green ARROW.
At the compound, Felicity is confounded as the DNA from the tooth they took from the bad guy is missing half the genetic markers ("He should basically be a pile of goo," she says). An alarm goes off.
Diggle has tracked down Fayad and is watching her from a balcony when Felicity calls. He ignores the call. Ollie rushes out on his own.
Flashback #2: The guard is telling Ollie to bury any humanity as the only thing these villagers/drug farmers understand is violence. Some of the drug is missing (the runner was a distraction). Guard rounds up all the villagers.
Green ARROW arrives in a factory to find two dead bodies (their throats have been slit). Double Down emerges from the shadows. He peels one of the card tattoos from his body. Looks like THE FLASH isn't the only one that has to deal with meta-humans now. He tosses the card at Green ARROW, who shoots an arrow at it, deflecting it.
Meanwhile, Diggle's hiding spot is discovered. He quickly takes out the guard that found him, but the noise alerts Fayad and her body guards.
Double Down and Green ARROW tango some more, Ollie knocks him down. DD has a few cards up his sleeve (literally). He throws a rapid succession of cards from his body at Ollie.
Diggle is hunkered down on his balcony, returning gun fire. Fayad calmly walks to her limo and leaves just as Diggle runs out of ammo.
Ollie retreats by breaking through a garage door only to find one of the cards has cut into right bicep. He thinks about going back in and then flees.
Merlyn has a heart to heart with his daughter, Thea. He explains that the pit contains pieces of the souls of all the people who have bathed in its retorative waters. Since we're talking members of the League of Assasins, these weren't the most upstanding of people. Pieces of those people are coursing through Thea, giving her a blood lust or sorts. He tells her the only way to yield the blood lust is give into it. Thea lays into him. Apparently, father doesn't know best. He recants and tells her there is another way. A quest for a sage on a mountain who is trained in the ancient art of healing. And he offers to go on the quest with her.
Back at the compound, Felcity is tending to Ollie's wounds and briefing him on the intel she got from Cisco over on THE FLASH: Jeremy Tell was getting a tattoo when the particle accelerator blew up. Oh, and she is pissed that both Ollie and Diggle went off on solo missions that nearly got both of them killed. She tells them they aren't to leave the compound until they have an understanding. It's gonna be a looooong night.
Basically, Diggle isn't sure he can trust Ollie after the events of last season and Ollie doesn't understand why Diggle won't even let him try to earn his trust back. They agree to put the past aside (at least temporarily) when Ollie reveals that Double Down is working with a woman named Fayad.
Flashback #3: Guard wants to know who stole the drugs and if no one comes forward, the guy who tried to escape will eat a bullet. He shoots the guy. He motions for another villager to be brought forward. Ollie tells him his methods don't appear to be working.
Back at Palmer Tech, Felicity remembers she has a day job and checks in on the progress being made on the company-saving technology from Curtis Holt (aka Mr. Terrific, played Echo Kellum). There's some HD contact lenses (at $100K a piece, not much of a market for them). We have our first glimpse of the T-Spheres that are accessory of choice for Mr. Terrific in the comic books. Oh, she also wants him to run some tests on the playing card she pulled out of Ollie.
At Diggle's home, he comes clean on the intel he's been collecting for the past season or so. His brother was not collateral damage, but rather an assasination ordered by a group called the H.I.V.E.
Darhk, meanwhile, is reading the riot act to Double Down for not killing Green ARROW and Fayad for losing several of his men when she was compromised. He tells DD he needs another demonstration. He wants DD to try and kill him. DD does, but Darhk stops the card mid-air and then sends it into Fayad's neck. He tells DD he should now know how Darhk deals with disappointment.
Merlyn fails at father of the year again when he sends two of his assasins in to kill Thea. She goes into a rage and kills them. It was his plan to get her to give into the blood lust. He lied about the sage and the cure. He tells her it will only continue until she has killed the one who caused her death (Ra's is already dead). On the plus side, she won't feel the hunger to kill again for a couple weeks. So, there's that.
At the compound, Felicity has tracked down Fayad's cell phone. Diggle and Ollie head to the location.
Flashback #4: Ollie is torturing one of the villagers. The woman who insulted him earlier comes forward and admits that she took the drugs, but only to give to villagers who were in pain because they are being overworked. Guard is about to shoot her when Ollie tells him the boss wouldn't like it if all of the workforce is exterminated and he should take her some place and dispose of her where they will never find the body.
Thea is packing. She tells Laurel that Merlyn has no interest in helping resurrect Sara nor in saving his own daughter from blood lust. She doesn't want anything to do with him ever again. He offers to use the pit to resurrect Sara.
Diggle and Green ARROW arrive at the cell phone location to find Fayad dead.
Back at Palmer Tech, Curtis has discovered that the playing card is made out of human DNA. Felicity ponders if he can track down who it belongs to (trying to play him the way she was played by Ollie initially). Curtis is a little to smart for this, though. He tells her the front of the card contains tattoo ink which contains magnetite. Magnetite also is found in the beaks of birds and aids in direction. She asks if they can use it to find the guy. He tells her it would be easier for the guy to find them. Cue Double Down, who enters, fires a warning card above their heads and makes them an ultimatum: the person who tells them where to find the Green ARROW gets to live.
She tells him to run, the enter a secret elevator, but DD stops the doors from closing. Until Felicity knees him in the groin. The doors shut and Curtis asks her how long she's been a bad ass. She tells him she works with the Green ARROW and she's taking him to the only place where they will be safe: the compound.
He follows them down there (exactly how he found the stairs to the secret lair is anyone's guess). Felicity grabs a gun and, closing her eyes, fires at him. He tosses several cards at the pair, cutting a light fixture which promptly knocks out Curtis.
Ollie and Diggle arrive. Ollie seems both surprised and impressed that Felicity managed to defend herself. She tells him Curtis, who is currently at the hospital, knows her secret, but not Ollie's. She's managed to track Double Down (who is fleeing Star City back to Central City and THE FLASH seeing as he has failed Darhk).
Nyssa makes one more failed attempt at stopping them from resurrecting her dead lover, Sara. Thea and Laurel lower the body into the Lazarus Pit, anyway. Sara leaps from the pit and immediately charges at Thea (remember: the blood lust can only be satisfied by vanquishing the person who killed you and Thea was the one that killed her).
Green ARROW and Diggle stop Double Down at the city line. He tells them he was trying to call it a draw and flee. They won't let him go until he tells them who hired him. He replies they don't scare him nearly as much as he does. Double Down then throws three cards at Diggle. Ollie leaps in front to save him. Turns out his new outfit is bullet proof.
Looks like Ollie's back in Diggle's good graces as the next sceen features the trio who made up OTA (Original Team ARROW; Ollie, Diggle and Felicity) enjoying beers and mararitas. Double Down is locked up in the meta-human prison on THE FLASH. Ollie tells them he's been working on something to draw out Darhk. It's not a secret, it's a surprise.
Flashback #5: Ollie is escorting the woman away from camp. She thinks he's going to kill her and dump her body. He tells her to walk quicker. The guard following behind them hits a land mind and goes flying. He tells her she needs to trust him or they are both dead.
Felicity checks up on Curtis. He's lied to security about the mess in the lab (an unforeseen reaction to something he was working on). He tells her he came to Star City to make it a better place and is thrilled his boss is doing just that.
Laurel cannot wait to bring Sara home to dad. It won't be any time soon, though. Sara is acting like a feral animal. Merlyn reminds them this is unchartered territory. The pit has been used to heal, not resurrect.
The pit won't be used ever again, though. Nyssa has saw fit. Her late father Ra's had a plan should the pit ever fall into the wrong hands. She's poisoned its waters. She tells Laurel that Sara's death was on Merlyn's hands, but her resurrection is on hers.
Malcolm Meryln loses his get-out-of-death free card, Laurel's made a big enemy in Nyssa and Thea is realizing that Sara is going to want to kill her. Felicity proves she's got balls, but Curtis comes through with spheres. Pretty good episode if you ask me. Your thoughts?
