Okay, so look, there are so many people who complain that this show is inferior to its predecessor, but I'm sorry people, this is what is known in the biz as an "epic finale." I'm honestly not sure I blinked the entire time. And if you gave up on this show, I'm sad that you didn't get to experience this two hour masterpiece.
Let's start with Ofelia, because it won't take that long. Ofelia is on her own, she made it to the US and someone with a big old rifle found her. And yes... that was her entire storyline. And no, there is still no word on whether or not Salazar is alive. Am I naive believing he is still out there?
Moving on... to Travis. In the pop up triage center, Brandon and Derek are bro-ing hard and annoying the crap out of everyone. They tell Madison they were in a car wreck and the driver died. Madison is able to assess that it is Chris they were talking about. She tries to get them into the hotel so Travis won't see them, but the ruckus it causes alerts Travis to their presence. When he confronts them, they tell him Chris died in the crash. When their stories don't match, Brandon confesses Chris was injured and then he killed him because he knew he would slow them down. Rage takes over Travis as he brutally beats Brandon and Derek to death and injures Oscar in the process. Elena and Hector take Travis into "custody" as Andres tends to Oscar's wounds. Madison tells them that they will all leave the next day as long as they can take Travis with them. Andres tries to operate on Oscar but he dies which leads he and Hector to attack Travis. As Andres is about to kill Travis, Alicia stabs Andres. Strand comes to their rescue and advises them to run, but he will not be joining them. Travis, Madison and Alicia head to the market and manage to find their way to the Colonia where they find a very dead Marco and Antonio and a nearly dead Alejandro who manages to convey to Madison that Nick was indeed just there.
And now to Nick. After realizing last episode that Marco and gang have located the Colonia, Nick goes to the market for one last attempt for a negotiation. Marco advises him to run. He informs Luciana and Alejandro that they have to go and forces Alejandro to admit to Luciana that he is not immune. When they are all attacked in the infirmary, Alejandro is bitten and confesses the truth. Luciana does not want to leave because she still has faith even if Alejandro lied. Nick tries to leave but comes back to get Luciana when he tells her there is a refugee camp right across the border. He convinces Alejandro to go out in a blaze of glory. Marco and Antonio arrive and find the camp empty except for Alejandro. He drives the bus through the fence leading the dead to infiltrate the Colonia killing Marco and Antonio and their gang. At the border, Nick points out the refugee camp across the border through the binoculars and gives Luciana hope. Naturally, right at that moment, she is shot and they are held at gunpoint.
Death Watch - Not even counting all the nameless people, tonight's death count was astronomical including Marco, Antonio, Oscar, Andres, Derek, Brandon, Alejandro and Chris (?). That's a pretty big night. I mean... that wiped out a good portion of the cast. Not to mention some of the most violent and gruesome deaths we have yet to see on this show. Starting in the infirmary with dude getting his nose bit off and then Nick pushing the dead guy's eyes into his skull. Not to mention Travis kicking the bloody crap out of Brandon and Derek before finally killing them and then topping it off with cutting Oscar's brain open leading to the brawl in the hotel room. It was a brutal evening.
Final Thoughts:
Nick and Luciana and the Colonia residents are attacked at the border and held at gunpoint. Who is this? A militant group? The actual military?
Alicia has discovered her merry murderess inside and killed Andres to save Travis. She has become minimum ten times more interesting over the course of this season. Here's hoping the same for Ofelia next season.
Did Madison let it slip that she has a darker past than we all know about? "I was this way before?" What the heck does that mean?
Is Chris more like Travis than we ever thought possible? There is clearly some deep seeded anger in their genetic code that we weren't aware of previously.
Strand stayed behind! I repeat, Strand stayed behind!
Lastly... do we REALLY believe that Chris is dead? Like really? Are we taking the word of Brandon and Derek? And I admire that everybody is playing along including on TALKING DEAD, but I don't know... just don't buy it. Just me?
This season was stellar. I will continue to profess my love for this show unapologetically. I can't wait to see where we go from here, especially since we'll have basically a new cast. I like how genuinely dark all of these characters are turning out to be. And Nick, the meth addict seems to be the only one who is sane in this world. That is fascinating storytelling right there.
But in two weeks... we're going back to the East Coast and finally see who Negan killed? Any bets? I'm going with Eugene. And as always, if it's Daryl, I'm done.
