The winter finale of HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER finally answered the question to the flashbacks we have been watching all season, who killed Sam Keating. The entire season has been teasing as to who actually murdered him. We knew that almost all of Annalise's student interns, (I call them the Scooby gang), are involved in the cover-up from all of the flashbacks of them trying to remove the body and destroy any evidence. We also knew that Rebecca was involved in it, as well as having Sam's blood all over her, and that Asher was the only intern not involved, because he was out looking for the trophy that Michaela stole from him. Just because we saw who was covering the murder up, there was never any clear evidence as to who actually killed Sam. Until now.
I was thinking all season long that despite Annalise's strengths in the courtroom, she never had it in her to actually murder him for cheating on her. She has seemed resigned to knowing that all along, and sure enough, our first scene starts where last week left off, an epic fight brewing between her and Sam about his lies and infidelity. It ends however, with some serious words being tossed back and forth, but Annalise grabbing her keys, and driving out of the driveway. Looks like a lot of the Internet chats were wrong. One suspect down.
Here we go..... First one into the house was Michaela, trophy in hand, and determined to wait and talk to Annalise when she gets back. She wants to trade-in her ill-gotten trophy, and get out of the midterm exam. Sam isn't happy she is there, and wants her out, but she is determined. Over Sam's shoulder she sees Rebecca who has snuck into the house. After a quick glare by each of them to the other, Rebecca takes off, running up the stairs and locking herself in the bedroom. Sam follows her up and as she starts to download information off of Sam's computer, he bursts through the bedroom door, causing Rebecca to then lock herself in the master bath.
Freaking out, Michaela calls Scooby gang to let them know what is going on and begging them to come help. Wes fills her in on Sam's affair with the dead Lila, which freaks her out even more. As Sam gets ready to break into the bathroom, the gang arrives and go upstairs to talk him down and get Rebecca out of there. Lying that she didn't find anything, after downloading information off of his computer, she walks out, but as they start to leave the room, Sam tackles them and sees THE FLASH drive bounce to the floor. A free-for-all starts, as the Scooby gang tries to escape Sam, and as he lunges for Rebecca, Michaela knocks him over the railing and he falls flat on his face on the floor below. WOW, it's actually self-defense.
But wait, there's more.... As the Scooby gang starts a slow freak-out on Sam's death, he makes another lunge on top of Rebecca and starts to strangle her. BAM! The trophy hit's Sam aside the head and puts him down as blood starts to go all over the floor. As we pan the room, the trophy slowly falls to the ground out of the hands of Wes. We have a winner friends, Wes actually killed Sam.
We now see the flashbacks forming the scene again; showing Wes going back for the trophy, the disposal of the body, the close calls with Asher, the bonfire, the missing ring, and Laurel getting Frank to get the trophy back to Annalise. Between the flashbacks, Annalise has gone to her detective fling, that ends in another steamy sex scene, and we see Bonnie getting drunk and how she ended up over at Asher's place. Soon Annalise is trying to get a hold of Sam, and she leaves a long message about how she is sorry for the parts she has played in their infidelity, and she really loves him. Uh-Oh Scooby!
Soon the whole bunch is being called back to the office. Bonnie leaves Asher and says they are never to speak of their being together. Michaela actually brings a signed pre-nup to her prospective mother-in-law, a big change from last episode. Wes destroys the hard drive so they have no proof they were in the home, and leaves Rebecca at the motel he put her for safe keeping. Connor tells his ex, the break-down he had last night was from him addicted to drugs, and leaves him scratching his head as Connor goes back to meet the Scooby gang. Laurel is there and Frank walks in holding the statue, which he says was left on the porch and is back up for grabs. As they are all seated in the study, Annalise comes out, dressed in her bathrobe and with her wig off, looking vulnerable.
As she walks out, she thanks them all for coming on a Saturday and says the police will be there soon to talk to them. As the Scooby gang's eyes grow larger, she explains through tears, that she and Sam had a fight last night. She found out he had an affair with the dead girl, Lila, whom their client is accused of killing, and he is gone and won't pick up her phone calls. She is afraid he has left town. She tells them she is sorry she has to involve them, but since they have all worked with her on Rebecca's defense, the police will probably ask them all a lot of questions, and to be honest with them. She asks them if they will all do that for her, and as she looks at Wes, he answers relieved for all of them, "of course." That leads us to one final flashback.............
Wes is going back again to get the trophy, (murder weapon), from the crime scene, and as he picks it up, and looks down at Sam, he again says how sorry he is that it all happened. Suddenly, a voice from across the room says, "Don't be," and as Wes looks across the room, Annalise is sitting behind her desk, watching him. HOLY SMOKES! What just happened?? Until January 29th Stranger Friends...............S
************* OMG! How long was she sitting there? When did this take place in the timeline? Was this before she went and had crazy love with detective man, or after? Did she tell Wes to rig the coin toss? We have a lot of questions to ponder over the mid-season break. New episodes start again on January 29th, and ABC will be re-broadcasting the show again between now and then to let the audience see if they can find any clues we might have missed. It's going to be a loooooong two months.
