Uh oh, are The Doctor and Clara finished as partners? There is a lot to discuss about tonight's episode of DOCTOR WHO, "Kill the Moon." But proceed with caution if you have yet to watch, because there are SPOILERS!
The episode starts off with Clara on the Moon in the year 2049. She is speaking to Earth, and she tells them that there is a terrible decision to make and the man who normally helps is gone (The Doctor left Clara behind??). She says that it is an innocent life verses the future of all mankind. We also catch a glimpse of Courtney Woods next to Clara!
We flash back to Coal Hill School where The Doctor and Clara are going to the TARDIS where they find Courtney. The Doctor had told Courtney she wasn't special, making her act out, so Clara tells The Doctor to use this opportunity to tell Courtney she is special, but of course instead of dealing with things, The Doctor asks Courtney, "How would you like the be the first person on the Moon?"
They land on the moon in the year 2049. The TARDIS lands in a space shuttle that is carrying 100 nuclear bombs. The shuttle's crew finds them, and The Doctor points out how there is gravity and asks the crew what's the matter with the moon. The crew admits that nobody knows, but that it's causing chaos on Earth. The leader of the crew tells The Doctor that they are on the Moon to blow up whatever is messing with the moon.
The crew, The Doctor, Clara and Courtney head out on The Moon's surface, upon which Courtney exclaims, "One small thing for a thing, one enormous thing for a thingy thing."
The leader of the crew, Lundvik, tells The Doctor that a group of Mexicans doing mineral service disappeared on the Moon 10 years ago. When they reach where the Mexicans were working, The Doctor goes through their data and he sees that they didn't find any minerals on the Moon. He realizes that the Moon is falling to bits.
Back on the surface of the moon, one of the other astronauts goes to investigate a nosie he heard and is attacked. Back inside, they hear a high pitched scream, and a spider-like alien comes to attack them. The Doctor realizes it senses through movement, and he tells everyone to head for the exit slowly. As they are about to escape, one of the other astronauts comes back and is attacked and killed by the creature. As it is attacking him, the others escape-well everyone except Courtney, who gets trapped in the room with the creature. As it is about to attack her, she sprays it with the anti-bacterial she has on her killing the creature. The others come back into the room, and The Doctor inspects the alien creature and realizes that is was a germ.
All of this excitement has made Courtney want to go home, so The Doctor shuts Courtney into the TARDIS. Clara doesn't understand why they can't just leave since they've been to the future and they would know if the Moon was destroyed, but The Doctor tells her that
There are some moments in time that he simply can not see-little moments where big things are decided and this is one of them. He tells her that whatever happens to the Moon hasn't been decided yet and that it will be decided here and now.
So, clara, The Doctor and Lundvik go back out on to the surface of Moon. They need to figure out what's killing the moon in order to save it. The Doctor gets attacked by another germ, and after they get it off of him, they see that the germ is multiplying and evolving. The Doctor throws his Yo-Yo into what appears to be water, but is actually amniotic fluid, and then proceeds to jump into it.
Clara and Lundvik head back to the Mexicans' space and soon after The Doctor returns exclaiming that he knows what the problem is. He tells them that the germs are tiny bacteria living on something very big. The moon is actually hatching-the moon is an egg that has been growing for 100 million years. He says the creature inside the egg is unique; the only one of it's kind in the universe. Lundvik then proceeds to ask, "How do we kill it?"
Clara and Courtney, who is on video screen from inside the TARDIS, do not want to kill it, since it is a life, but Lundvik points out that it's killing people and destroying the Earth. Clara asks The Doctor what they should do, but he tells her, "Sorry, Clara, I can't help you, you don't need a Time Lord, kill it or let it live, I cant make that decision for you." The Doctor tells Clara, "It's time to take the stabilizers of your bike. It's your moon, womankind, it's your choice."
Courtney returns in the TARDIS and The Doctor proceeds to go in the TARDIS and leave them behind. Clara, Lundvik and Courtney are discussing options, with Clara and Courtney against killing it since it's only a baby. Ground Control comes in, telling them things are bad on Earth. Clara asks him if they can broadcast on this uplink. Clara talks to the people of Earth telling them that they have a terrible decision to make. She asks them to send them a message, if they want them to kill the creature turn their lights off, but if they want them to take a chance and let it live to leave the lights on. THE HOUR counter on the bomb is going down, and with less than five minutes left all the lights on Earth are off. The clock is about to reach zero, when both Clara and Courtney hit the button to turn the bomb off. At that moment, The Doctor comes back makes them come into the TARDIS. He takes them to a beach back on Earth to watch what happens to the Moon. They see the Moon hatch, and the chick flies away and the eggshell disintegrates; harmless.
Lundvik asks The Doctor, "What happens now?" The Doctor goes off into a speech about Humankind and how it will spread out across the farthest reaches of the galaxy and endure until the end of time. He says this happens because for the first time they looked out into the blackness and saw something beautiful and in that moment the whole course of history was changed. And at that same moment, the chick laid a new egg-a new moon.
They part ways with Lundvik, and they are back in the TARDIS. They return Courtney to school, and now Clara and The Doctor are alone. Just as the TARDIS is about to set off again, Clara stops it. She says to The Doctor, "Tell me what you knew?" to which he replies, "I had faith that you would always make the right choice." Clara, crying and upset, tells him that she's sick of listening to him, and that what he did, "was cheap, it was pathetic, no it was patronizing." The Doctor tells her, "That was me respecting you," to which Clara tells him, "That was you, my friend, making me scared." Clara is so upset that she tells him to, "Get back in your lonely bloody TARDIS and you don't come back." She leaves and is back at Coal Hill as the TARDIS is seen leaving in the background. Clara goes back to her classroom, where Danny stops by. She ends up telling him everything. She tells Danny that she's finished with The Doctor, and then questions why Danny doesn't believe her. Danny tells her, "You never finish with anyone while they can still make you angry." He tells her to calm down and then tell The Doctor. The episode ends with Clara at home, drinking a glass of wine, and staring out her window at the Moon, the creature she saves.
Oh boy, is this the end of The Doctor and Clara? Things aren't looking so good for the duo. Honestly, though, I've seen this coming. All season The Doctor has been doing things that have made Clara-and me-question him. I actually heard some speculation from a fellow Whovian that there are rumors that the Twelfth Doctor is meant to be evil, and with him always questioning whether he is a good man or not, maybe this time alone will send him over the edge, "into darkness." Though I don't want to see The Doctor I love go bad, it would make for a very interesting rest of the season.
A last few little things I liked about tonight's episode: First off, the nod to Tumblr was great, it was cool to see them recognizing the website that is fuel for the DOCTOR WHO world. I am continuing to really like the character of Courtney Woods, she brings a comedic effect that only a kid could. Finally, Clara is really shaping up to be one of the strongest companions. I continue to say this, but I am growing to really love her. I did not particularly enjoy the second part of Series 7, which is such a shame because now that I see how great Clara is when she is given a better voice, I can only think about how much better her time with Matt Smith could have been. Alas, I can't live in the past, and I can at least be happy that she has such a great voice now.
