I've come to learn whenever there is laughing or smiling of any kind on THE WALKING DEAD, it is just the calm before the storm. And tonight's episode was no exception. At least the cast members acknowledged Eugene's mullet and as it turns out, they think it's just as funny as we do.
As mentioned, right after all the fun joking around on the road trip, the bus crashes pretty brutally. Everyone survives, but they are swarmed by walkers immediately. Abraham, Rosita, Glenn and Maggie take them on leaving Tara to defend Eugene and finally forcing Eugene to kill a walker. He is clearly traumatized.
When they arrive at a new temporary safe haven, a library, Glenn and Abraham bond a little bit. Glenn is such a good dude. He's really become a Rick Grimes type leader in just trying to keep the peace with everyone. Abraham and Rosita have a tryst which is apparently a regular thing and they notice Eugene watching them and they don't mind. Tara catches him too and he confesses to her that he put crushed glass in the fuel line of the bus to make it crash. He thought it would break down sooner and never meant to kill anyone. He's just afraid he'll be useless once he serves his function and no one will protect him.
Even though everyone wouldn't mind a day off, Abraham insists they soldier on and finds a fire engine as their new transportation. Of course it doesn't work and of course they're swarmed by walkers, however, Eugene winds up saving the day by turning the fire hose on them. A disgusting smell starts floating toward them and as they saunter up the hill a bit on foot, they witness a sea of walkers they would have to get through to continue North to D.C. Everyone wants to reroute except Abraham who is flipping out. The chaos prompts Eugene to make the confession we've all been waiting for: he's not a scientist. Abraham goes crazy and beats him to a bloody pulp and busts his knuckles. Through flashbacks, we see that he's done this before to save, what I can only assume were, his wife and children. Right after he finds them dead, he sees Eugene running from walkers asking for help. Abraham helps him and starts to walk away until Eugene tells him he's on an important mission. Abraham has something to live for.
For me, what was so brilliant about this episode beside the obvious biblical undertones, is the parallel lives of Abraham and Eugene. In flashbacks as well as in present, Abraham is coming to terms with things he's done and trying to rectify it for the greater good. Eugene has done a lot, even though no one knows it and is ready to confess. No one knows what Abraham has done but Abraham is the first to jump on Eugene (literally) when he hears his confession. Abraham acts without pondering consequences. Eugene ponders consequences, but acts regardless. And the incredibly beautiful mirrored shots from the flashbacks to the post-Eugene beating of Abraham just helpless on his knees praying for guidance as the one thing he had to live for is now gone was just an example of the brilliance this show brings.
What I Know:
Water from a fire hose makes the show, yet again,, top itself for disgusting ways to kill walkers.
Maggie STILL hasn't mentioned Beth. WTF, dude?
Michael Cudlitz is truly underrated as an actor. He is remarkable.
What I Don't Know:
Was this the first time we were made aware that Abraham and Rosita were a "thing" or am I just oblivious? (It's quite possible I'm oblivious.)
Was it my imagination or did Tara seem quite intimate with Eugene even after she discovered he sabotaged the bus?
Eugene mentioned the preacher and how he was horrified at what he had done. Is that what sparked his confession?
Lines I Love:
Tara - Maybe Rosita can give you a trim while she's at it. Party's getting a little long in the back. Or is it your source of power?
Abraham - I really need some ass first. Glenn - Didn't need to know that but... cool.
Eugene - I believe they know I catch an eyeful on occasion which isn't to say it's their thing, it's not mine either. It's just that I enjoy the female form and I consider this a victimless crime that provides both comfort and distraction.
So where does this leave our road trip crew? Is Eugene dead? He looked in pretty bad shape and even though everyone is very angry with Eugene, will they be able to forgive Abraham? Does Abraham have anything to live for at this point? Do any of them now that they have no hope for mankind? Was anyone else trying to get Usher's "Confessions" out of their heads the entire episode?
