My immediate reaction; whoa! THE ORIGINALS is back and wasting no time getting into some crazy action, suspense and twists. In one hour, the cast has almost entirely changed and with the reveal in the last two minutes, I shall stick to my initial reaction; whoa! Major Spoilers Ahead: You've been warned!
With a handy little fairytale-esque recap from Rebekah, we are reminded of the events of the season finale. Klaus, Elijah and Hayley had sent baby Hope away to live with their Auntie but the rest of New Orleans believed she had perished. Hayley was turned into a hybrid and Francesca and the Guerrera gang had effectively banished all vampires from the French Quarter.
Hayley and Klaus don't seem to be handling these changes all that well as they both are having separation anxiety from their daughter as well as the confounding desire for vengeance against Francesca and the wolves. Marcel and Cami seem to be doing all right with a little FWB situation. Cami visits Klaus to mend fences between he and Marcel (again). Klaus sees no alternative but to team up with Marcel and his buddy, Joe, to infiltrate the French Quarter to reclaim it for their own.
Davina is doing her best to protect the remaining vampires even after she left her coven. A coven that just happens to include the creepy twosome that arose at the graveyard in last season's finale. She is also nursing Mikel back to health, unbeknownst to all, who happens to be in possession of the White Oak Stake. And you thought you had Daddy issues?
Francesca is nervously awaiting the vengeance from Klaus who no one has seen in months. She is locked up in a beautiful house protected from the vampires. Once Klaus and Francesca figure out that the other doesn't have the Stake, the stage is set for battle. I may or may not have squealed when the music began as the battle started. This is way too much excitement for a Monday evening. The werewolves are taken out one by one and Elijah confronts Francesca outside the doorway of her home. See, he had that house declared an historical landmark, therefore, it was owned by the public and he gleefully walks in the front door. He lets her escape so that Hayley may catch her and have her revenge. She does, but shockingly, feels no better. She is a monster now and can't forgive herself for letting Hope go. Being the amazing brother/person that he is, Elijah convinces his grieving brother Klaus to go be there for Hayley.
In the final scene, we are reacquainted to the creepy twosome from the finale, the witch and "Vincent" and they are joined by newcomer, Isaac Kaleb. Then comes the big reveal: In new bodies, they are actually Esther, Finn and Kol Mikelson! They're back! And I thought my family reunions were crazy!
So I think we are set up for Season Two. The entire Mikelson family is now back on Earth, even if all of them are not aware of each other's existence. Mikel certainly has it out for Klaus and wants nothing but to kill him and honestly, Esther's plans don't seem any better. I can't imagine what will happen at the first reunion. Will they find each other all at once or one by one? Will Esther and Mikel team up again or will it be every man for himself? Is there ANY chance at all they can all let bygones be bygones and go to a jazz club and laugh about old times?
I was happy to be rid of Francesca as the villain as I think that storyline had definitely run its course and literally bringing back the entire family of Originals is such a brilliant plot development. I can't decide if they're setting up a Marcel/Klaus/Cami love triangle or a Klaus/Elijah/Hayley love triangle. Either way, it's the least interesting part of the storyline right now.
What I Know:
Cami looks a lot like Caroline. Klaus certainly has a type, doesn't he?
Cami looks a lot like Rebekah. Marcel certainly has a type, doesn't he?
Klaus and Marcel are on again/off again more often than Ross and Rachel.
What I Don't Know:
Claire Holt. Is she back? Is she gone? Can we make up our mind already?
What would I give to visit Second Life Vinyl? Looks like an awesome store.
I was not aware that Daniel Sharman was British. Kudos on your English accent on TEEN WOLF.
Lines I Love:
Elijah - Mobsters always suffer from such hubris.
Hayley - I was a mother, now I'm a monster.
Klaus - You chase my redemption like a man rolling a stone up an endless mountain. Elijah - No mountain is endless, brother. Some are just steeper than others.
What were your thoughts? Were you incredibly surprised at the twist or were you foolish like me and look up Daniel Sharman's role on Wikipedia and get it spoiled for you that he was playing Kol? Just me? Huh. Please share your thoughts below or with me on Twitter @eponineq. Also, follow @BWWTVworld for the latest scoops, recaps and updates throughout the week.
