BWW Recap: Supergirl Overcomes "Medusa" in the First Part of the Four Part Crossover
This week's episode of Supergirl was the first part of the four part crossover series with The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow. The Danvers family Thanksgiving is interrupted by Cadmus releasing a virus called Medusa on National City. Meanwhile, Alex struggles to come out to her mother (guest star and former Supergirl herself, Helen Slater) and Kara fights the idea that Mon-El has feelings for her.
The episode opens with the Danvers family, including James and Winn of course, gathering for Thanksgiving. James and Winn are arguing over who will get to tell Kara the truth about the Guardian. However, Alex insists that she has a big announcement of her own and that they can't overshadow her. Drunk Alex is by far my favorite Alex. Mon-El shows up with flowers and a pillow case of stuffing...at least he tried? He immediately begins charming her mother and Kara tells Alex that he's hitting on her. Eliza Danvers quickly corrects her that he is sweet-talking her to impress Kara.
A Danvers tradition is for each member of the family to say what they're thankful for. James starts by saying that he's thankful for having friends who are understanding, but Alex cuts him off. Mon-El says that he is thankful for Kara because she is understanding and gracious. Alex interrupts again that she is thankful to finally feel like herself. She's clearly trying to come out, but a weird blue blob suddenly appears in the air.
Back at the DEO, Kara says that she wants to ask Lena what she knows about Cadmus, but Winn suggests hacking into her phone lines and computers instead. Everyone else doubts that Lena would tell Kara the truth, but she's determined. She shows up to L Corp and tells Lena that she's writing an article on powerful women and their mothers. Lena doesn't appear to know much, but calls her mother as soon as Kara walks out.
At the alien bar, an alien is trying to flirt with Mon-El and, for once, he's not responding. He tells her, "I actually am looking for company, but it's someone else." It looks like Mon-El really is in love with Kara! Hank Henshaw, in a hooded jacket, puts a device on the underside of the bar before walking out. Mon-El follows him outside, thinking it's J'onn, and Hank begins to beat him up. The device in the bar begins letting out a gas that kills as the aliens. Mon-El returns inside the bar to find all the other aliens dead.
J'onn placed Mon-El in a cell at the DEO in case he was affected by the gas at the bar. He's desperate to be allowed out and Alex promises that Eliza is going to try to use her experience as a scientist to figure out what the gas was. Alex tells Kara that she and J'onn have to stay in the DEO until they figure out what the substance is, to Kara's displeasure.
Lillian Luthor shows up to L Corp to talk to Lena. There's a lot of tension between the two of them as they both know that Lex was her favorite child. "No parent truly loves their children equally," Lillian says chillingly. It's revealed that they've barely spoken since Lex's trial. Lena warns, "There's a reporter sniffing about. She's smart. She knows something about you."
The cutest scene of the entire show (okay, second cutest) was Kara and Mon-El playing Monopoly through the glass of his cell. Kara suddenly asks, "You don't like me, do you?" Um, Kara, you can't just ask someone that. She tells her that her mom said that he likes her, but he tries to play it off. Mon-El is so cute trying to pretend that he's not totally into Kara, but he suddenly starts coughing and falls to the ground. Kara rushes into his cell to help him, not caring if it affects her.
Eliza examines Mon-El and tells Kara that he is infected, but stable. She says that luckily, it isn't transferable from person to person, only from the weapon. The virus is from Krypton and was created using Kara's blood.
Kara realizes that Cadmus got into the Fortress of Solitude and immediately goes there. The robot helper says that Kara is an intruder and tries to fight her, but she kills it. Kara finds out that Hank Henshaw looked up "Medusa." A hologram of Kara's father tells her that Medusa is a weaponized virus that he created to kill non-Kryptonians. Kara is very upset and tells her father, "Growing up you told me your work was to save lives." Watching Kara learn that her parents weren't the perfect people she thought they were has been rough this season.
Medusa is an unstoppable bio-weapon that kills all aliens except Kryptonians. Eliza tells Kara that Mon-El is fighting hard against the virus, but that the infection will win if a cure isn't found. Kara gives her mother and Alex the information she found in the Fortress of Solitude so that they can try to make a cure.
Eliza tells Alex that she knows she's been trying to tell her something. Alex is struggling to find words, but her mother encourages her. "Does it have anything to do with Maggie?" she asks. Alex confesses that she is gay and says, "I feel like I'm letting you down somehow." Eliza is very affirming and supportive, of course. I love how Supergirl has focused the story of Alex being gay on her realizing it and coming out to her family. A lot of shows skip over the coming out process, but Supergirl has portrayed it in a very touching and real way.
Kara tells J'onn that she's ashamed to be her parents' daughter. "Your parents' legacy is not death and destruction, Kara Zor-El. It's you ," J'onn says. I love J'onn and Kara's father-daughter dynamic. All of a sudden, J'onn morphs into a strange creature for moment. He admits to Kara that M'Gann's blood is turning him into a White Martian, but says that they can't work on finding a cure for him until after they've defeated Medusa.
They've located the isotope needed to spread the virus and it's owned by L Corp. Kara rushes off and Alex asks Maggie for back-up. Hank Henshaw is already storming into L Corp, where Lena is surprised to see him fighting Supergirl. Maggie's team arrives just as Hank almost kills Kara and though Kara gets away, Maggie is hit by a bullet. Everyone but Kara is convinced that Lena knows about Cadmus, but she believes in her.
Supergirl goes to ask Lena for help finding her mother. She tells her that Lillian is the leader of Cadmus, but Lena claims that she's lying. Lena is upset that Supergirl is attacking her family, like Superman did and dismisses her.
While treating her wounds, Alex tells Maggie that she came out to her mom. When Maggie asked how she took it, I loved Alex's response of "Better than me." Alex is finally comfortable with the fact that she is lesbian and it's been so great to watch her on this journey.
Mon-El wakes up to find Kara at his beside. He tells her that it's okay that he's dying, but Kara feels responsible because her family created the virus. I'm curious to see if Mon-El almost dying will make Kara realize her feelings for him. She's clearly very upset about the idea of something happening to him. He tells her that she's beautiful and kisses her before falling back asleep. I actually screamed! It felt like this build-up took so long, but it was less than James and Kara last season at least.
Lena confronts her mother about being involved with Cadmus. "Is this the part where you lecture me like you'd lecture Lex?" Lillian asks sarcastically. I was so disappointed when Lena offered her the isotope she needed, but I wasn't sure that I believed her.
Winn sees that Cadmus is preparing to release the virus at the National City port. J'onn and Kara go to fight, though Kara is concerned that if the virus is released, he will die. However, J'onn is ready to die because at least he would die while still a Green Martian.
Lena's mom tells Lena that she must release the virus to prove that she's dedicated to the cause. Supergirl and J'onn arrive and try to convince Lena not to go along with her mother's plan. However, she releases it and I screamed again because I couldn't believe it. The footage of Hank Henshaw and J'onn fighting was so cool; I can't imagine how they filmed that with David Harewood playing both characters.
Kara rushes off to try to diffuse the virus, but it's too late as it cascades down on National City. However, it doesn't appear to be hurting any of the aliens. Kara returns in time to hear Hank say, "You might be an alien, but I'm cyborg Superman." She tells him, "You may be a cyborg, but you are not Superman" as she takes him out. However, he disappears before she can do more.
Meanwhile, Lena reveals that she switched out the isotope and called the police. Not only did Lena save the day, but she did in while wearing amazing outfits. Is Lillian Luthor being arrested the end of Cadmus?
On some other planet, strange hooded figures tell a man to find Mon-El Daxom. Clearly, they want to kill him...I'm worried for his future! Back on Earth, Eliza reverse-engineered a cure for Mon-El, which she also was able to use on J'onn's White Martian blood cells. Kara and Mon-El talk, but he says that he doesn't remember their interaction while he was sick. My friends and I all think that he was only pretending not to remember kissing Kara.
Maggie shows up to Alex's apartment with pizza. She says that almost dying made her realize that life is short and "we should kiss the girls that we want to kiss." They kiss and they're absolutely adorable. I'm so glad that they're finally together and tha t they took the time for Alex to feel comfortable with being a lesbian first.
At the very end of the episode, the blue blob appears again and The Flash and his friend come through it into Kara's apartment. She's very excited when she sees him and he tells her that he's come to ask for her help. It perfectly set up the crossover episode tomorrow night on The Flash, even if we didn't get to see much of Barry on Supergirl.
Will Mon-El and Kara ever get together? Are you as happy that Alex and Maggie are together as I am? Let me know what you think on Twitter at @nicoleackman16 and don't forget to check back next week for another recap.
