It seems like it's been forever since we last left the conspirators in Sam Keating's murder and attempt at covering up the deed. Wes, the actual perpetrator, and his fellow law students have worked hard to cover their tracks. Wes also developed a relationship with suspected killer Rebecca that complicated his part in the whole mess. The other members of "the Keating Five" - Connor, Michaela, and Laurel - have all had their ups and downs, too, as the story has unfolded in the first half of the new series.
Tonight, we rejoin the Keating Five and pick up where they left off back in November. The murder victim (burned up by the gang) is missing. We can expect stories to conflict among the group. We also get to see how Annalise Keating deals with what has happened to her unfaithful husband. Annalise thinks her husband is missing and uses her students to help find him. Annalise is also working on the Lila Stangard murder, since she continues to defend Rebecca in that case. If District Attorney Parks has anything to do with it, Rebecca is going to prison for that murder.
The way things are going, I predict trust will be a huge theme in coming episodes. No one needs a crystal ball to foresee we will see twists and turns before we wrap up the season. Let's head back to Philadelphia and see what happens next for "Hello Raskolnikov," episode 10 of HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER.
Opening: Sam is missing. Annalise is going over what happened leading up to Sam's (ahem) disappearance with detectives. She tells some lies - didn't know about the penis photo, only just found out about the affair of Sam and the dead coed. We see her remembering finding Sam dead and talking to Wes. Two stories - one the truth and one for the cops - begin to unfold in a whole new way. He deserved to die, she tells Wes. To the cops, she just says she visited Nate.
Nate shows up at the police station to talk to Annalise and they agree to talk later.
At Annalise's house the next morning, the Keating Five talk about keeping their stories straight when Annalise returns. She is worried they are going to blow the lid off of what happened out of paranoia. She reassures Wes that everything will be alright and she will get the charges against Rebecca dropped. The sexual tension between Annalise and Wes pops up a little. Then D.A. Parks shows up and tells Annalise she will still pursue prosecuting O'Reilly and Rebecca. Let the games begin!
10:13 pm EST: The police begin to question the students, starting with Wes. Wes works hard to maintain his story even as he remembers seeing Sam do rough things. Annalise talks to Rebecca to reassure her she plans on getting the charges against her dropped. Later, lounging in bed, Wes and Rebecca talk about their worries.
Keating charges her students with the task of proving that Sam in fact did murder Lila Stangard and the means to kill her. They use various electronic avenues and data streams to see what he did. At the same time, Bonnie and Asher have awkward talk after sleeping together; Laurel and Frank also have awkward talk since they have crossed the sex line too. They follow the lead that Lila might have gone to an abortion clinic but the judge denies the request for records. Nate reports back to Annalise about the detectives' questions. They still have feelings for each other and get pretty cozy.
Observation: This episode seems like it's on speed a bit. Scenes are flting by at a faster pace than usual.
10:25 pm EST: Laurel is being questioned and like Wes and Annalise she tells her version of the story and remembers what really happened. Later, Laurel and Frank talk and he seems to have some suspicions. The other student conspirators debate whether they should go to the D.A. and confess to save themselves and their law careers. Bonnie was worried how things were left back when Annalise fired her but everything has changed. Michaela finds a precedent in the law that the records can be revealed and the judges sides with Keating. DNA results are delivered by Frank - Sam is the father of the Lila's child. Annalise confides in Frank. At least, I think she was going to let him in on some key fact, but it went to commercial.
Observation: The manic pace really gives this episode a new flavor.
10:35 pm EST: Asher's turn with the detectives and he talks about the coveted trophy. Remember, Asher is not one of the insiders. He was with Bonnie. They both talk to the police about their fling. Bonnie confronts Asher about their romp. Security footage reveals Sam was at the abortion clinic and Lila did not want to go through with the procedure. But Sam did want her to go through with it. Annalise suspects Sam killed Lila over the unwanted pregnancy. Annalise lets the judge know they may find hard evidence on Sam's laptop which is in lockup thanks to the D.A. The judge rules they will examine the computer's hard drive and cell records. Annalise gloats in front of the smug D.A.
The lightning pace of tonight continues. Example: the court scene may have lasted 60 seconds. Maybe.
10:44 pm EST: Now Michaela talks to the cops. Her story has a hole in it and she is nervous when she rattles on with Connor. Frank confronts Laurel but in a passive agressive manner that confuses her. Connor and Michaela want to make sure Laurel is on their side but she is too upset with Frank.
In court, the forensic expert talks about tracking Frank's movements, where he ended up at the sorority house where Lila lived. The evidence clearly shows Rebecca was not the murderer and Rebecca is free and clear. Annalise overhears people talking about her in the ladies room. Oops.
Connor and Michaela try to convince Laurel to go with them to the police. They all agree on the plan. This means they will be leaving Wes as the loner connected to Sam's murder. I think, however, they are forgetting they were helping him with destroying evidence, moving the body and generally being accessories to the crime.
10:52 pm EST: Michaela, Connor and Laurel drive to the Philadelphia Police Department to spill the beans. Wes and Annalise meet them? How? Annalise told Frank, Frank confronted Laurel, and Laurel tipped off Wes and Annalise. Keating assures the trio their plan will not go the way they expect. She pleads with them and offers her help to them to get away with it. ("It" being murder, 'natch!)
The next day, in her law class, Annalise lays out the hypothetical problem for their law exam. Each student is occupied with various thoughts of their relationships.
Connor is the last student seen talking to the cops. He lays it on pretty thick about Sam skipping town. We see Annalise in her bedroom, the phone rings and Hannah Keating, Sam's sister, arrives and insists to the cops her brother is no murderer. BAM!
This fast-paced episode zipped through getting Rebecca off for murder charges. Sam appears to be Lila's murderer. And the Keating Five are sticking together and to their stories - for now. Keating won another victory in court but we know her sister in law is arriving to protect Sam's good name.
