Kara, I know that you're used to hot men throwing themselves at you, but you have to be careful. In this week's Valentine's Day themed episode, a mysterious man tries to seduce Kara, Winn makes a new alien lady friend, and Maggie and Alex have a misunderstanding. I thought that this was one of the best uses of a guest star I've ever seen on a show and one of the best episodes of Supergirl all season.
The episode starts off where the last one ended with Mr. Mxyzptlk interrupting Kara and Mon-El's conversation in her apartment. He magically makes flowers, candles, and musicians appear and then proposes to Kara. Um, what? He tells her, "I'm your one true love, your soulmate." Anyone else too happy when Mon-El broke in and said, "She's with me"?
I absolutely loved when Mr. Mxyzptlk called Mon-El "tall, dark, and blandsome." To get rid of Mon-El, he transports him to the DEO...in his underwear! Kara is understandably upset, but Mr. Mxyzptlk keeps trying to convince her to love him. He even sings bits of "A Whole New World" (a genius move as he played the Genie on Once Upon a Time Wonderland). My favorite part was when he changed her into a wedding dress and when she protested that she didn't want it quipped, "Why not? It's Vera Wang."
He tells her that he's watched her over the years and that he wants to marry her. He does admit that there are limitations on his power: he cannot make her marry him, love him, drink orange juice, or stop her from killing herself. (Yeah, that comes back later.) She protests, but he insists, "I chose you as my mate" and vows to make her fall in love with him before poofing out. I'll admit that at this point in the episode, I thought he was pretty endearing...if a bit creepy.
J'onn explains that he's a fifth dimensional being and has considerable powers to change realities. Mon-El says that they had them on Daxam, but had a zero tolerance policy for them. He's curious about Valentine's Day and Kara tells him that she wants to get back to their talk, but she needs to get rid of the imp first. Mon-El remarks, "Of all the girls in the galaxies, that little imp had to pick you." Oh Mon-El, don't you know? Everyone falls in love with Kara.
Meanwhile, Alex and Maggie are hanging out over breakfast. Alex shows her girlfriend the card her mom sent her for Valentine's Day. Maggie hates the holiday with a passion and Alex pretends to agree, but it's clear that she doesn't. Trouble in paradise?
Winn almost gets beat up at the alien bar by two alien thugs, but a badass alien lady comes in an d saves him. (Could I use the word alien more in that sentence?) He's highly impressed and is even more excited when he finds out she's from his favorite planet, Star Haven. Lyra asks him to dinner and he's so cute being excited for his date. I think Winn will always be my favorite character.
Kara is fighting some robbers, but Mr. Mxyzptlk appears and fires their own guns at them. Kara is able to save them in time, but she's not pleased. Back at the DEO, she tells J'onn, "He's much more dangerous than I thought." Mon-El is quick to suggest that they kill the imp, but Kara is adamant that they need to deal with him non-violently.
Kara sees the parasite alien, the first one that Mon-El fought, outside her window wreaking havoc. While she's fighting it, Mon-El appears and joins the fight. However, Mr. Mxyzptlk flies in dressed in a superman suit to save the day. He mocks Mon-El's lack of superpowers and tells him that Kara needs someone equal to her. Kara is upset when he says that he caused the parasite alien, however she's more upset when Mon-El reveals that he knows the way to get rid of the imp: to say his name backwards. Mr. Mxyzptlk threatens that if Kara doesn't marry him, he'll continue harming National City. Okay, significantly less endearing...
Anyone else kind of disappointed when Kara and Mon-El's argument didn't end in them kissing? When Mon-El said that he was "defending your honor," I thought Kara might explode. I loved how she said, "I'm Supergirl and I can defend myself." Mon-El gets so sassy with her and it's clear that he's jealous; in fact, I think Kara is pleased that he is.
Winn asks Mon-El for girl advice (I've been waiting for this moment for so long). "You're great with girls; they throw themselves at you left and right," Winn says...with perhaps not the best timing. He shows Mon-El some new technology that has to do with the fifth dimension, so of course when Winn leaves for his date with Lyra, Mon-El takes it.
Kara suggests that Alex set up a Valentine's Day tailor m ade for Maggie, but she's not pleased with it when she gets to the apartment. When Alex demands to know what's wrong, Maggie admits that she has bad memories associated with the day. She lied about her parents being supportive of her coming out. When she was 14, she left a card for the first girl she'd ever had a crush on who gave it to her parents. When her parents found out, her dad kicked her out and she had to live with an aunt for three years. I thought that the acting in this scene was absolutely brilliant, even though the subject was heartbreaking.
Winn shows up a bit late to his date because he managed to make reservations at a busy restaurant. However, Lyra starts making out with him right in the middle of the alien bar. Way to go, girl! I'm a fan of this new alien lady.
Kara and J'onn discover that the fifth dimension device has gone missing. However, Mon-El is already looking for Mr. Mxyzptlk who challenges him to a duel and transports him to a theatre. As a super Hamilton fan, I absolutely loved this. I basically screamed when Mr. Mxyzptlk said, "I'm a Burr man myself." And anyone else appreciate how great they looked in the period costumes?
Mon-El cheats and fires his gun at Mr. Mxyzptlk (of course), but it doesn't hurt him. Mr. Mxyzptlk says, "There's no contest between you and me and you know it." He is about to shoot Mon-El with lead when Kara appears and says that she will marry him. She tells him to meet her the next day at noon in the Fortress of Solitude because she wants to be married on the soil of her people.
Mon-El goes to her apartment to try to convince her not to marry Mr. Mxyzptlk. He admits that he is jealous and says, "I wish that I could snap my fingers and give you all the things you wish for." Even though I knew Kara must have a plan, it hurt to see Mon-El so upset. Mon-El begs for a second chance, but Kara says that his patronizing ego is too much and that she's going to marry Mr. Mxyzptlk despite not being in love with him. She says they can use their powers to fight for justice together and that "We'll be a great team." I thought my heart would actually break when Mon-El responded, "I thought we were going to do that." I can't see how anyone wouldn't ship Mon-El and Kara after this episode.
Mr. Mxyzptlk is confused when Kara shows up to the Fortress of Solitude in her Supergirl suit, drinking a glass of orange juice. When she tells him that she's not going to marry him, he creates an ice monster to fight her. She destroys it and seals off the fortress, before setting it to self-destruct. He freaks out at the thought that she might die, but one of the things he can't do is stop her from killing herself. When she told him, "I'd rather die in here than be with you," my friend Jenna said, "Rejection of the century!"
She finally agrees to show him the cancellation code and points out the right Kryptonian symbols to type in. Of course, it's his name backwards and he's sucked back to the fifth dimension. I love that Kara always finds a way to save the day without compromising her principles.
Winn is at the restaurant when Lyra shows up. She's surprised that he is interested past a one-night experience, but he tells her that he has no problems dating an alien. When he said, "Potentially falling for an alien is not what scares me; it's falling for anyone," I was reminded of why I love Winn so much. He asks her to take it slow, but it didn't look like it was going slow to me...
Kara had suggested that Maggie needed to make some changes for the sake of Alex's happiness and when Alex arrives at the apartment, there's a box with a note that says, "Put this on." She shows up to a beautifully decorated ballroom in a sexy red dress, where Maggie gives her a corsage. "I was too busy nursing my own wounds and I forgot to look at the gorgeous woman in front of me," Maggie tells her. I absolutely adore their relationship because it feels so realistic.
Mon-El shows up to Kara's door and tells her, "I just wanted to let you know that you're awesome." (Kara really does have it all.) He's so impressed and apologizes for doubting her ability to deal with Mr. Mxyzptlk. He even says, "You are my Kryptonite" and tells her that he's never felt this way about anyone before. I laughed out loud when he said, "I didn't know there were this many feelings to be had." And yes, I actually tearred up a little. He goes to leave, but Kara stops him and admits that she tricked him into letting her go to Mr. Mxyzptlk so that she could protect him. The episode ends with them making out and honestly...I think we all waited long enough for this.
How excited are you that Kara and Mon-El finally got together? Did you appreciate the song choice of "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" at the end? I sure did. Don't forget to tune back in next week for another episode of SUPERGIRL and check back for my next recap.
