Last week I was super afraid that this episode would be predictable and I was am so very, very happy I was wrong. Why would I ever doubt Shonda Rhimes? She sure knows what she's doing because I sure didn't see that coming!

Iran, the winner of the auction decides to renege on their deal once Olivia, apparently fluent in Farsi, explains that it's going to be a blood bath. The auction is open once again for Olivia. Huck jumps in quickly and they wind up tying with some Russians for $2 Billion Dollars. (So hard to write that without doing a Dr. Evil impression) The captors ask Olivia who they should give it to. Olivia, knowing that the other bidder is someone trying to rescue her, advises to go with them, which immediately inspires them take the Russians offer. (You really didn't see that coming, Olivia?)

The President is still set on an extraction to rescue Olivia even after he is explicitly told by his staff that it is a bad idea with about a 30% chance of success. Cyrus knows this is the wrong decision and plots behind his back to have her killed at the exchange. Abby figures out his plans and informs the Gladiators and they have to save the day. Jake turns to one last desperate hope, Rowan, who is not really interested in his daughter's safety as much as his fishing time.

Mellie presents the VP with his immunity deal and he threatens her that he will ruin any hint of her own political career. She turns to an unlikely ally, Elizabeth, and begs her to have the VP dealt with. Elizabeth, in turn, turns to the unlikeliest of people, Huck, to have take care of the VP. Huck is trying to turn over a new leaf since Jake counseled him to get his dark tendencies under control. So he only gives the VP a stroke. That's fair, I mean there really was no blood.

As the drone focuses in on the exchange, Cyrus calls off the execution as he recognizes the "Russian" who won the auction. It's STEPHEN FREAKING FINCH! (Or Desmond to us LOST fanatics). Yup, Stephen from Season One who has been working throughout St. Petersburg. And who contacted him? Abby. Abby Whelan saved the day. Liv offers a job to Stephen, but he's happy where he is.

Back at home, everyone is super relieved and Olivia is showing slight signs of PTSD (understandably) and won't let anyone stay with her. When the President shows up, she finally takes him down about what horrible decisions he has been making. Taking all those innocent lives to save her and with that, she's done. And this time, she means it... at least for a little while. Will this open the door for a romantic reconciliation between POTUS and FLOTUS?

Whew. I'm trying to remember the last time I watched this show and wasn't exhausted at the end. That was quite a surprise guest star as well as twist in our story. I, also, very much enjoyed that Olivia immediately turned on her captors and just started kicking the crap out of them. And Abby finally had her comeback Gladiator moment. I think she is becoming more and more disillusioned with the White House. Will this send her back to Pope & Associates? And props, as always, to Mellie for being able to turn on those poker faces when there is staff around and then go right into secret, conniving mode when they're not. Bellamy Young is just amazing in this role, I will never stop singing her praises. Between she and Jeff Perry, there is never a shortage of good performances. And even though they stick out, I think Tony Goldwyn isn't given enough credit for his performance. We never, ever know if he's a good guy or a bad guy, so in essence, he plays a pretty amazing President.

So, present "scandal" averted, what happens now? We'll have to be dealing with Olivia's stress following her captivity. I imagine her latest fallout with Fitz may open a door for Jake? I hope? Also, I doubt that Cyrus secret plan will stay secret for very long and I don't think it will be exactly healthy for their friendship. Will Abby head back to her old job and see if Olivia can repair the business to its former glory? Will we ever see Cyrus' fiance again? Or Huck's family? Will David Rosen ever catch a break?
