This week's episode, aptly named "Nevertheless, She Persisted" was an emotional end to SUPERGIRL's second season as Kara finally defeated Rhea and the Daxamite forces. However, even with the help of Superman and Cat Grant, victory doesn't come without a price.
The episode started where last week's left off, with Superman flying in to join Supergirl's fight against Rhea. He states, "This is my planet, these are my people, and I will not let you harm them," but then starts to fight a confused Kara. Rhea explains that she poisoned him and has caused him to see his enemy General Zod instead of Kara. (Articles have hinted that Zod will be one of the villains of Season 3.)
In their fight, Superman throws Kara off the ship and they fight across National City. At the DEO, Alex realizes something is happening and hurries to find her sister. The super-cousins' battle devolves into an epic fist fight until Kara finally knocks Kal-El unconscious. So basically, our girl beat up Superman? Alex rushes to her side as she collapses.
Kara dreams of waking up in Mon-El's arms. In the dream, she explains to him that the necklace she wears is the one that her mother gave her the day that she left Krypton. Dream Mon-El informs her that she's actually in the Fortress of Solitude and she wakes up to find Alex there with her. She explains that Kara flew her and Superman there before passing out.
When Superman wakes up, he's back to normal and thankfully not trying to fight Kara anymore. He tells her that Rhea's silver Kryptonite poisoning didn't weaken him at all and that she beat him at full strength. He has an idea for an old Daxamite ritual that could help them defeat Rhea.
Lillian comes to Lena, demanding, "How could that woman deceive you?" Lena fires back that she's the one who caused her to be so desperate for validation that she fell for Rhea's attempt at mentorship. Lillian offers Lena a device from Lex's vault that she thinks might be the answer to getting rid of the Daxamites.
Kara and Superman return to the DEO where she immediately embraces Mon-El. Winn characteristically freaks out over Superman and asks if he remembers him. "Winn Schott, resident genius of the DEO?" Superman answers to which Winn simply mouths "I love you." Have I mentioned lately that Winn is my favorite character?
When Kara explains their plan, Mon-El freaks out. She messages Rhea asking her to meet her for a sacred one-on-one battle and the Daxamite queen readily accepts the challenge. Mon-El is concerned about the possible consequences if his mother wins, but Superman assures them that if Kara beat him, she can beat Rhea. "I don't have time for you to be afraid," Kara tells Mon-El gently. "I need you to be strong."
M'Gann telepathically speaks to J'onn who is still unconcious, urging him to wake up because everyone needs him. He wakes up confused, but Alex tells him that M'Gann is still on Mars. "What happened here?" he asks to which Alex simply responds, "Everything." I've missed David Harewood so I'm so glad that J'onn came out of his coma for the last episode!
My favorite moment of the whole episode was when J'onn walked back into the DEO and Winn yelled, "Hey Papa Bear!" before giving him a (can I say it?) bear hug. J'onn overhears the media calling the upcoming duel the Intergalactic Fight of the Century and says that they need to tone down the sensationalism to avoid bystanders getting hurt.
Kara and Clark Gent go to CatCo where Cat is infatuated with Clark as always. She makes some inaccurate Star Wars references and then quips, "Whatever, I've never seen Star Wars" when they correct her. I love when SUPERGIRL makes little jokes about the fact that Calista Flockhart (who plays Cat Grant) is married to Harrison Ford. The pair offer Cat an exclusive interview with Supergirl in exchange for help de-sensationalizing the battle, which Cat agrees to and tells them that she's betting on the Girl of Steel.
The super-cousins meet with Lena and Lillian Luthor, who propose using an old device of Lex's. The device was designed to put Kryptonit e into the atmosphere, but Lena says that she can change it to work with lead which Daxamites are allergic to. If they used it, all the Daxamites would have to leave...but that includes Mon-El.
Back at the DEO, Kara explains Lena's suggestion. Mon-El insists that they should use it if they need to, saying, "I won't be the reason this planet suffers." Kara says that they told Lena to work on it, but asserts that they won't need to use it. Winn is sent off to L-Corp to help Lena while Mon-El offers to go with Kara to the battle as moral support. Nothing like watching a friendly battle between your mom and girlfriend, right?
Superman teaches his cousin some new moves, but it's clear that she's upset. She says that she feels like she's on the brink of having everything she wanted but she only gets to keep it if she beats Rhea. Superman tells her that the people they love are their secret superpower and that he's always fighting for Lois, no matter where he is.
Kara, Mon-El, and Rhea arrive for the duel and terms are quickly agreed on: if Rhea wins, Earth will surrender, but if Kara wins, all the Daxamites must leave. Supergirl quickly gains the upper hand, but when Rhea falls to the ground, the Daxamite forces start attacking the city. Supergirl asks Mon-El to help the civilians and he reluctantly leaves her side.
Rhea reveals that the destruction of Daxam caused Kryptonite to seep into her blood, which when spilled begins affecting Kara. Meanwhile, Lillian watches as Lena and Winn finish modifying the device. Lillian tries to turn it on, but Lena reveals that she gave Supergirl the remote and only she can turn it on.
In the streets, Mon-El is fighting the Daxamites and helping civilians. I loved when he said "Sorry, not sor ry" after defeating a soldier! M'Gann shows up to help J'onn fight, along with some White Martian friends. Cat and James are at CatCo as the building comes under attack. Superman and a Daxamite fly in through a window, but Superman quickly defeats him. "At least he tried," he quips.
With the Kryptonite weakening Supergirl, Rhea seems like she's going to win but Kara quickly gains back control. Rhea tells her that her soldiers are attacking schools and hospitals and won't stop. Mon-El flies back to Kara's side and she pulls out the remote. "I'm so sorry," she tells him as she turns the device on.
Rhea immediately falls to the ground choking as soldiers all over the city beam themselves back up to their ships. The ships immediately leave Earth, but the victory feels short-lived as Mon-El begins to cough as well. Rhea begs her son, "Mon-El, please, save me." He counters, "Like you saved Father?" She turns to dust, but there's little time to reflect as Mon-El's cough worsens. Kara has a brilliant idea and asks Alex to bring her the pod she came to Earth in.
Before he gets in, Mon-El tells her, "I promise I'm going to be the man that you thought I could be." Kara responds, "You made me so happy." Did anyone else cry? As they both cry, Kara gives him the necklace from her mother, telling him that it will keep him safe. My heart broke when Kara said she loves him and that she should have told him before. He gets into the pod and leaves, as tears stream down both of their faces. Why do I always choose TV shows that hurt me?
Back at the DEO, everyone but Kara is celebrating their victory. Superman comes to tell her goodbye and tells her that he's humbled by her because he doesn't think he could have made the same choice. Elsewhere in the DEO, M'Gann explains to J'onn that his mind cried out to her so she responded. She tells him that she found other White Martians who feel the same way as her and want to change their planet, but that she'll stay on Earth for a while.
Alex comes to talk to Kara and tells her that she comforted her earlier that year when she needed it and reminds her that she's so proud of her. Kara tells her that she just needs to know that her and Maggie, Winn and Lyra, Clark and Lois, and J'onn and M'Gann are happy. I loved how Alex asked Kara, "What do you need right now?"
Kara responds, "Just never let her go" prompting Alex to propose to Maggie. We didn't get to hear a response, but Maggie looked absolutely elated so I'm hoping it's a yes. This was by far the sweetest moment of the episode and I hope we'll be seeing a wedding in Season 3!
Kara goes to talk to Cat, who inquires why she's upset. Kara tells her that she had her first real relationship, but that it didn't work out. Kara says, "Everyone close to me in life is in a happy relationship and I thought I could have that too and I'm starting to think that it's just not in the cards for me." Cat reassures her that she will survive her heartache. "The thing that makes women strong is that we have the guts to be vulnerable," she tells her. She says that she read all of her articles and that she's proud of what she's achieved. "You, my dear, are on a hero's journey," she says. When Kara leaves, Cat says, "Go get 'em, Supergirl" revealing that she knows who Kara is. All through last season, I kept waiting for Cat to figure out that Kara was Supergirl so I'm glad that we finally have proof that she knows.
Kara hears sirens and flies off to be Supergirl as Mon-El, in his pod, is sucked into some weird portal. I'm curious to see if we see him again in Season 3. It seems pretty unlikely, but his exit from the show hasn't been confirmed. His departure from Earth was absolutely heartbreaking, so I desperately hope he gets to return!
The episod e ended with a bizarre flashback to Krypton thirty five years ago, on the day that Kara and Superman left for Earth. It shows another child being put into a pod headed for Earth by hooded figures. The child is referred to as an "it" that will reign over the Earth. I guess it looks like we've got our first villain for Season 3?
Thanks for watching Supergirl with me through another season! I hope you're looking forward to Season 3 as much as I am. I'm excited because Katie McGrath (Lena Luthor) is becoming a season regular and I'm hoping to see even more plots revolving around her. Have predictions about the next season?
