Couples fever is in the air... though the happiness isn't quite. Rayna is jet setting for work, terrified to leave Deacon, Juliette and Avery (but mostly Juliette) and struggling to find the balance between mother and career, Scarlett and Dr. Rand... well, they're pretty good. But they're also still in the honeymoon phrase. As our Jade St. John and Luke Wheeler (who will be broken up by the end of the episode). Juliette has no reason to feel like the worst mother in the world- Micah's mom (whose name escapes me) knocks on Gunnar's door, oblivious to the fact that a) Gunnar knows the truth and b) her son hasn't lived with him in nearly three months. Mother of the Year she is not.

And things aren't as "under control" while Rayna's away (visiting Deacon's bipolar sister...secretly) as Deacon would like her to believe. Maddie, never one to keep it boring in the spirit of teen rebellion, is caught with her boyfriend. At her house. In the morning. Which- comically- leads to a discussion between Deacon and Juliette on when girls start having sex. Awkward, but admittedly bit funny.

Rayna's reasons for lying to Deacon are completely in the right place- she's trying, hopefully not in vain, to help safe his life. The scene may be frustrating, but we're given some flashbacks out of it, which is most definitely worth it. Beverly, stubborn as ever, refuses. And we finally figure out why. Beverly wanted the big career, the fame, and the recognition- and she was headed there with Deacon. But when Deacon booked a gig on Rayna's tour (and subsequently fell in love with her), those dreams fell apart. Convinced that Rayna took Deacon from her, she insists that Rayna can be the one to save him. Still insanely selfish, of course, but a tad more understandable. And I'm loving these flashbacks.

Juliette and Maddie have so much needed, much adorable girl time. Juliette, dense and self-absorbed as she can sometimes be, gives Maddie some pretty darn good advice. Telling Maddie to "do it for the right reasons," Maddie tells her she'll be a fantastic mom. Which- not totally based on this scene but partially- I believe too.

Teddy's hole keeps getting deeper and deeper. He's not so different from his hated father-in-law, that's for sure. From his prostitute problem, to embezzelling money to pay off the prostitute, to being set up by the feds thru the prostitute, this guy cannot catch a break (not that he necessarily deserves too).

Shortly after Deacon drops his bomb on Juliette, Kiley drops one on Gunnar. She didn't cheat on him with his brother. His brother raped her. She also had no idea (or so she says) that Micah wasn't the father. Suddenly, everything we thought (and Gunnar thought) has been completely flipped.

Teddy- though a felon- has his moments. The Tiffany necklaces he bought his daughters were precious, and, an unethical, selfish and corrupt politician or not, he still loves his daughters. Props there. Teddy, a little dense but not completely stupid, is preparing for the worst- writing letters to Maddie, Daphne, and even Rayna. And right before boom goes the dynamite, a close friend (assumedly working for someone higher up), is prepared to extradite Teddy from all charges...for a cost. Like I said, the hole keeps getting deeper.

Just when you start to think Jeff Fordham has started to developed, well, human feelings... a pang of jealousy causes him to one again act recklessly and immaturely. By this I mean posting a photo on Layla's twitter of something Jade asked to remain private. This will obviously end spectacularly. Or, you know, not. Jeff is in no rush to lose the character we "love to hate" title any time soon.

In a final attempt at an olive branch, Rayna hands Beverly over $1,000,000. Because you apparently can put a price on love. Or at least desperation.

Tonight's episode was far from boring- a ton of bombs were dropped. What was the most shocking? Kiley's rape? Rayna's handout/ bribe/ act of desperation? Teddy potentially getting off the hook? Let me know in the comments or tweet me @WendiReichstein.
