After surviving the cruise from hell in last season's finale, we are back after way too long of a break. The NEW GIRL crew is back and goofier than ever as they try and maneuver their way through their LA life. Within the first few minutes, the group and their new found chemistry including Coach came out swinging. Now if only the theme song would incorporate him... (And Cece too!)
We jump in a few months after the disaster (not the cruise, the breakup) but it seems that Nick and Jess are moving along just fine. They are being inundated with wedding invitations (And boy can I relate, three this month!).
Schmidt proclaims that this last summer wedding is the opportune time for hookups. He vows that, "NO one comes home alone." Jess concurs with an awkward sex fist metaphor. Jess and Nick seem to be getting along just fine as friends and have no problem discussing hookups with each other. I already feel weird. Intentional?
Enter Ted, guest star, Reid Scott of VEEP fame, as a potential hook up for Jess but she has a big rival in Kat, guest star Jessica Biel. (She landed JT, Jess, lookout!) And the game is ON. Kat lays out her game for Jess and she is understandably intimidated. But Jess has something Kat doesn't: her friends. (?) Winston comes up with the winning strategy of : The Biden. Basically, everywhere Ted is, be there. It is an exhausting, albeit semi-successful plan. But she really gets the advice she needs from who else? Nick. The advice is to just be herself. Ted is finally faced with his choice, which he absolutely cannot make.
The rest of the group has just as tough of a time. Coach seems to have pissed off every woman present at the wedding, Cece is going through a recent breakup of her own, Winston is way too sore from the police academy to have sex and Schmidt just cannot convince Nick to have a four-way with him and two of the bridesmaids. After discovering that Cece is actually single, Schmidt has an uncharacteristically calm reaction and the four-way is cancelled.
After Jess strikes out, the group all fail in their conquest until Jess lovingly points out that none of them are going home alone technically. They all go home together and delightfully destroy all the past and present wedding invitations.
Is it me or does it feel like this show got their groove back? Yes, it's episode one so it may be too soon to tell but their chemistry felt real and natural. I'm still a little annoyed at the cliche of breaking Nick and Jess up, but I'm willing to give it a chance if they continue with episodes such as this. I cannot wait to see where Schmidt's unrequited crush on Cece takes it. And I will still beg for more Winston time. (Funny how annoyed I am that Nick and Jess broke up and yet I fully accept that Schmidt and Cece can't stay together. I need therapy.) What a great premiere and I can't wait to see where we go from here.
MVP - Reid Scott. Can you do no wrong?
Runner Up - Nick Miller in tap shoes, just because.
