MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. celebrate the mid-season final with reversals, reveals and more. Let's jump right into the declassified files, shall we?
We begin right were we left off last week. Ward, Raina and Skye (Brett Dalton, Ruth Negga and Chloe Bennett) leave in the smaller jet. May (Ming-Na Wen) jumps into the pilot seat. They have a minute before Hydra opens fire. She nose-dives into a cloud, releases a smaller plane from the cargo hold and then cloaks the bus. Hydra missles his the other plane. Hyrdra thinks they have downed S.H.I.E.L.D.
May, Tripp (B.J. Britt), Hunter (Nick Blood) and the Koenig brothers (Patton Oswalt) meet up with Coulson (Clark Gregg), Fitz (Ian De Caestecker) Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) and Morse (Adrianne Palicki) in San Juan at the site of the alien city. Coulson tells Morse Hydra is on their way and to do everything possible for Mac (Henry Simmons) who is still trapped below and possibly under the influence of the alien writing. The team's focus is stopping Hydra from getting the oblisk into the tunnels.
Seeing as modern electronic equipment doesn't work in the tunnels, Tripp breaks out some of his granddad's equipment from the 1940s (when granddad was in the Howling Commandos; we will no doubt meet Tripp's granddad in January when AGENT CARTER premieres).
May is beating herself up over Skye falling into Ward's hands. Coulson reminds her that she saved everyone else on the plane and Skye can take care of herself thanks to May's training.
As promised, Ward takes Skye to her father, the Doctor (Kyle MacLachlan). He becomes emotional over the reunion. He composes himself and introduces himself as Cal, her father (as in Calvin Zabo, aka Mr. Hyde). He tells her she is exactly where she should be --it is her destiny. Since Fox owns Marvel's use of "mutants," the good doctor uses words like "special" and "gifts," but the meaning is clear. Skye has some kind of super power. He leaves her alone to go off and kill Whitehall (Reed Diamond).
S.H.I.E.L.D. is planning to blow the tunnels. Coulson tells one of the Koenig brothers to head back to base and prepare to "implement the theta protocol" if things go wrong.
Hydra is there, too. Some guards bring Skye to Whitehall, Raina, Ward and Cal. Whitehall has a theory. He wants Skye to pick up the oblisk. She does and doesn't die. She touches one of the guards, killing him. Cal is knocked out, Ward is taken into Hydra custody.
Tripp, Fitz and Simmons descend into the cave. They're wearing hazmat suits. Mac is no where to be found. Fitz goes off in search of him in the underground city.
Coulson and May storm the Hydra compound, temporarily stopping Whitehall from making good on his promise to torture Skye. Before Cal can kill Whitehall, Coulson shoots Whitehall. Cal is not happy that his plan for vengence was denied. They trade blows.
Ward frees Skye and tells her to remain seated while he checks the area. She stands, grabs a gun from a fallen Hydra guard and shoots Ward three times in the side. "Never turn your back on the enemy, you taught me that," she reminds him. And the student becomes the master. Ward is rescued by Agent 33, though.
Skye arrives to the brawl to issue an ultimatum to daddy: walk away or I will kill you. He leaves. Skye goes off in search of the oblisk, but Raina has descended into the caves with it. She has no choice but to follow her down there. And so does Coulson, telling May to get everyone to the bus in case they don't make it out before the bombs go off. And Tripp, too. Is no one in S.H.I.E.L.D. following orders anymore?
Skye catches up to Raina. The oblisk floats out of Raina's hand and lands on a pedestal, activating the walls to close in around them. Tripp enters the room just as the last door shuts. Coulson is late to the party and calls out to them from behind the wall.
The oblisk transforms into a blue crystal. Raina and Skye get covered in some black, tar-like substance. Skye pleads with her last breath for Tripp to do something. He does a swinging hook kick and smashes the crystal. Shards of it splinter off into him. He seemingly turns into a brickette. Skye bursts out of her cocoon as Tripp crumbles to dust.
Final reveal: An office. A box begins to glow. A man enters and opens the box revealing another oblisk. The man makes a call. "Are you seeing this? There's someone new. Tell the others I'm on it." The camera pans up. He doesn't have any eyes. At with that, the Mid-seadon finale comes to a close.
