Well, we finally got to catch up and see what happened with Travis and Chris. Turns out, the father/son road trip therapy session is not going as well as Travis had planned.
First we are treated to a little flashback to that wedding reception they all came upon at the seaside hotel in Mexico. Hotel worker, Elena, took it upon herself to "contain" the situation once the bride's dad added something special to the father/daughter dance: biting her face off. Months later, as Alicia is trapped upstairs, she comes into contact with, the still living, Elena and learns that she feels guilty for what she did and believes this is her punishment being stuck in the hotel with the dead. After she finally aids Alicia in getting downstairs to find her group, they are confronted by the mother of the bride (Guest Star, Brenda Strong) who is less than thrilled that Elena is still alive after letting her family all die. Elena wants her nephew, Hector, back in exchange for giving up the keys to the hotel. Elena, Hector and Alicia manage to fight through the bar and find a backroom where they discover Madison and Strand.
On the road, Travis and Chris seem to be getting are getting along swimmingly. Travis even takes the opportunity to teach Chris to drive. All is well until they run into a wild bro-pack from San Diego: Brandon, Derek and Baby James. They refer to the dead as "the wasted" because, of course they do, and really don't seem all that bothered by the apocalypse as they seem to be god-like in it. Travis is reluctant to trust the bro-pack, but Chris maybe wants to hang out with some real dudes his age. As they come upon a livable farm with crops and chickens, Travis realizes that this is someone's home and they are probably still there. The bros, including Chris decide that it is theirs. The homeowner does finally emerge with a shotgun, thus beginning, a true Mexican standoff. Travis tries to negotiate with the bros to do the right thing and give the man his land, but, as you can guess, they're not real "moral" guys. Rattled when Baby James break the neck of a chicken, the homeowner shoots Baby James. Chris picks up a gun and shoots the homeowner, endearing himself to the other two bros and terrifying Travis.
No sign of Ofelia or Nick this episode, but at least we know Strand and Madison are okay. Not that we were worried, at this point, but still. Some new characters in the mix, possible villains? Possible alliances?
First, the hotel gang. Obviously, Mary Alice mother of the bride has an ax to grind (no pun intended) against Elena, justifiably. Alicia did release some of the dead on them, but since we saw no actual, gruesome deaths, I'm betting this isn't the last we see of them? And can they all escape this Tower of Terror already? Also, I'm always in awe of when weddings take place in foreign countries on television shows, and yet, everyone only speaks perfect English. (Sigh). I know the bride was American, but even the hotel staff and the groom's family... only English.
Moving on to the bros, Brandon doesn't strike me as trustworthy at ALL. Gotta go with Travis on this one. Is Chris in need of some peer support at this point? Yes. Is it clear that he wants to prove his worth and show his skills to his new pals? Yes. Is Chris a downright psychopath with no hope of redemption? Starting to lean towards yes. And I believe, from the look on Travis' face at the end, that he is starting to wonder the same thing. In all the villains/alliances we acquired in this episode, is it possible the biggest threat is Chris? Also have to wonder if his only chance for salvation, at this point, is Nick.
Now, how are we going to reunite this gang? Is this going to be an end of season thing or is it going to wait a while until they meet up again. They can't be all that terribly far from each other as they're all mostly circling the border. But despite all of their turmoil, will it be a good thing for them to find each other again or is it better that they are all trying to survive on their own? And since Kenny Wormald of Footloose fame (playing Derek) is in the cast, there is CLEARLY only one solution to the standoff between the bro-pack and Travis: DANCE OFF!!!
