Wow! What a week it's been! And I'm not just talking about what you think I'm talking about. It's messy for Liza this week... made all the worse by the fact that she's essentially drugged up and knocked out while all the action's going on (so she's oblivious to basically everything). A freak accident on a MetroBike (thanks Diana!) lands her in the hospital, where hijinks ensue with Josh, Charles and yep, even, ex-husband David as worlds collide, storylines interwine, paths are crossed, meetings are made, and piggies are covered. (Don't worry... it'll all make sense once you're through with the recap/episode!) Plus, Diana has a chance encounter with a Broadway-friendly hunky hunk, and Kelsey acquires a new book for Empirical to publish... and gets a new boyfriend, too! It's all ahead (or behind, depending on if you've seen the episode or not!) on this week's recap, so if you're intrigued... you know what to do! Thanks!!
The A-Plot: While signing her divorce papers, Liza commits a small snafu when she accidentally writes down her fake age as her birthdate. (Gee, wonder how that could've happened??) She makes a plan to go back and fix it, no problem, but her divorce isn't as final as she thinks just yet. That's what you need to know.
David also mentions breaking up with his girlfriend and wanting to start things up again with Liza, as their little rendezvous last season seemed to spark his interest. So, apparently, that's still up in the air. (And that's also something important to know!)
Anyway, while running an errand for Diana (surprise, surprise), Liza gets into an accident and ends up in the hospital. Things go from bad to worse when - albeit all for legitimate reasons and due to their circumstances with Liza within the episode/series - all three men in her life (Josh, Charles, and yes, even David) show up simultaneously to tend to her aid.
Now, here's where it all goes bananas. Josh, being the current BF, is obvs there from the get-go, tending to her wounds, sleeping over to be with her, and providing general support. ("You're a good guy," Maggie tells him - and he is!)
Charles is contacted through Empirical's legal team and, because it was a work-related issue and Liza's an "employee [he] cares about," rushes to Liza's aid (leaving current GF Radha in the dust, mind you!)
And then, David's roped into this whole thing when Liza fails to show up at the mediator's meeting, and he calls to check on her whereabouts.
So, at the hospital...
Charles enters THE ROOM and asks if there's anything he can do to help.. and her answer (and his actions) may actually be more telling than you'd think; his covering of her piggies is a moment not unlike the zipping-up of her dress earlier in the season... especially again, with that music... and that squeeze... OMG!
Liza even admits to him that the moment they shared in the mall at the end of last season actually meant something to her, too: "Maybe if we were different people in a different place... things would be different." But drugged, sleepy and confused, she doesn't realize she's admitted that to David, who thinks she's referring to their drunken rendezvous.
So with that on his brain, he uses it to his advantage, and conniving-ly tears up the divorce agreement, which technically keeps them still married. And Liza doesn't know. Uh oh.
Oh. And on the way out, David and Josh meet. Double uh oh.
And then, for a final whammy, Radha and Charles break up... leaving him free to possibly pursue a certain 40-year-old-turned-26-year-old he works with. And she seems pretty into the idea, too - just look at her face when Diana tells her the news. If only she wasn't posing as 26, already dating a 26-year-old pretty seriously, and still married to her 40-year-old husband, to whom she thinks she's divorced. Zoinks! Definitely gonna wanna watch to see how this turns out!!! Oh boy, you YOUNGER writers. Always keepin' us viewers on our toes. ;-P
The B-Plot: Kelsey and her new beau, Colin, are really hitting it off - though she gets discouraged when Colin seems more into her duties as an editor than her duties in the bedroom. At Liza's behest (who suggests he's possibly looking for both), Kels gives his manuscript a chance, hoping to seal the deal romantically if his writing is up to par.
Fortunately, it is... and they're off on a new adventure!! That's all we really get here this week, but I'm excited because he's obviously returning and this could be a great new arc for the last few remaining episodes of the season!
Plus, Kelsey gets a new guy, so her romance plot/Empirical's new "get" are intertwined! Which could be excellent if it all works out... but something tells me it might crash and burn later... LOL. (Well, I mean, what else do you expect from this show?) We'll have to wait and see....
Broadway Babies: He's alive at last! And he's full of joy! Broadway's favorite Phantom/Mer-Man and newly announced Demon Barber of Fleet Street Norm Lewis makes an appearance this week as Clay, a graphic designer with a penchant for Metro-Biking (the YOUNGER-fied version of CitiBiking) who catches Diana's eye. They seem to hit it off, too (despite Diana's ridiculous attempt to actually ride the bike - LOL!) ... until Clay mentions he's married - to a guy! Yikes! Curveball! Did not see that one coming! That's all we get with this plot (and this guy) this week - though NOTE/SPOILER: the bike is hugely important to the A-plot - but here's hoping that Diana will actually find Mr. Right sometime soon. (BTW, whatever happened to hunky plumber man?)
Shout Out To: Maggie! Her scene with Liza is brief, but what a touching moment for the bookworm and our favorite born-and-bred Brooklynite! "You've given me a home and allowed me to make a better life for myself than the one I had." True dat! All these shenanigans happened because of you, home girl! You da bomb! You can tell Liza really means it, too. And yes, truly... it did all happen because of Maggie. Best friends forever!!
Sidebar Observation: As displayed by their conversation re: Clay, Diana and Liza are actually talking like gal pals, picking up where they last left off when discussing Diana's new look. Again, I know I say this all the time, but huge strides made from the beginning of the series. (Not to mention, she apologizes to Liza at the hospital - and she's sincere!!) There's no way this friendly relationship can't play into Diana's reaction with Liza's eventual reveal. Well done, writers! #Growth A+!
Line of the Night: Foster's deadpan of "This would be a much easier question if we didn't work in publishing," as a response to Kelsey's "Guess who has a book he wants me to read?"
And a topical joke that made me chuckle: "Well, her pain's at about a Chris Christie, so anything strong might be helpful." LOL.
Again, these writers are the BEST! Can't wait to see what they've cooked up for us next time. Oh... and speaking of cooking, we're off next week for Thanksgiving. Next ep. airs two weeks from today!
So... what are your thoughts? Where do you think Liza's headed next with her crazy tangled up love triangle? Let us know in the comments below... and we'll see you next time! 'Til then, as always, stay YOUNGER.
