Hey Stranger Friends, we have a whole lot to talk about after watching this week's episode of THE RED BAND SOCIETY. There was a little something for everyone, as every single character, (except Kenji), had a fun moment or two in the spotlight. Charlie is awake and blinking now, so everyone is going a little crazy. The Red Bander's are on the hunt for some of his favorite things to get him moving and talking again; Kara is trading this hunt for Hunter, and trying to find out a little more about what his deal is and who this new woman/girlfriend, may be in his life; and Nurse Jackson and Dr. McAndrews are a little freaked out if the Neurology Specialist they sent for Charlie, may be some quack that was interrupted from his AMERICAN IDOL audition.
It wasn't just a temporary flutter, Charlie is awake and able to respond to everyone's questions by blinking, but he is still not able to speak or move any other part of his body besides his eyelids. The boy may be able to take flight soon on those eyelashes as many questions as they are hammering him with, and awaiting his blinking response, they are flapping faster than a humming bird's wings. The good news is that Charlie will be able to stay at Ocean Park hospital, the bad news is that every time he tries to fall asleep, everyone is yelling at him to make sure he's not dropping back into his coma.
Leo, Jordi, Dash, and Emma, go on a trek to find some things that they think Charlie would like to look at, and may even get him talking and moving faster. Leo, still utterly clueless he is dating an anorexic, thinks that food will pull him out and they need to get pizza again. Emma thinks they should make him an origami mobile to hang over the bed because he loves his origami figures so much from his dad. Jordi had some puppy therapy while sitting thru his chemo, and thinks a dog just may do the trick. Last but not least, Dash thinks they need to appeal to his other basic male needs and thinks a nice pair of boobs will bring Charlie around.
They take Jordi's car that the now vanished Ruben gave him, and head out on their quest. The origami paper was pretty easy, the pizza was a piece of cake, so to speak, (I think cake on pizza would be pretty horrible honestly), Of course they found the one pet shop that was out of dogs so they go with the next best thing, an iguana. Their quest at the strip joint for a nice pair of boobs wasn't as successful, in fact, they couldn't get past the front door, even with Leo's last dying wish, cancer story. Figures they find a bouncer that's moonlighting as he goes to med school, and calls Leo out on his lie, reading him like he has his chart in front of him or something.
While they were shopping, Leo had Emma try his favorite potato chip and almost got her to eat a hot dog, because he thought they had the great cookie break-through last week. Besides freaking Jordi and Dash out, it looks like Emma is not quite as fine with the whole new eating thing either as she scrubs the potato chip residue off her hands harder than Howie Mandel after a handshake. At the end of the show, Emma is painfully hurting about this eating for Leo and throws her dinner across the room. I have to tell you, these past two weeks, puts the actor playing Emma, Ciara Bravo, toe to toe with the fine acting of Academy Award winner, and fellow cast-mate, Octavia Spencer. She's killing it.
Kara decides to stay in after she see's bad boy, Hunter, run into the arms of some blonde girl. Of course it leads to some of Kara's snarkiest comments towards the girl, until we find out its Hunter's sister, who just offered to give him half of her liver for transplant. (Kara is great for making HORRIBLE first impressions). Hunter refuses the offer and we find out that he actually had leukemia, and his liver was shot from all the chemo that saved his life and put him into remission from the cancer. Kara tries to help the sister convince Hunter that he should take him up on his offer, but after an epic fail, she actually convinces the sister that this is his last bit of control he has left, and he is actually more afraid for her than he is for himself. Hunter overhears, and this later leads to the huge kiss that all the fans were expecting and wanting since we first met the two of them together. Go Kara!
Back to Charlie, our highly sought after Neurologist has not been making a great first impression. He prefers jamming tunes on his guitar to reading charts and test results. He has convinced Dr. McAndrews, Nurse Jackson, and Mandy Moore's new Chief of Staff, Dr. Erin Grace, who fought for him to come here for Nurse Jackson, that he may just be a quack. Dr. Naday, played by Brit actor, Adrien Lester, is a bit too free-wheeling for the doctors and prefers playing songs with Charlie's Dad on his guitar, and the only thing he needs from Nurse Jackson is maybe a pastrami sandwich.
Eventually Dr. McAndrews decides to give him a chance as a favor to his former fiancé, Dr. Grace, so she won't look bad as her first act as Chief of Staff, by picking a weirdo. At the end he eventually turns Nurse Jackson around as he fills her in on the real reason he was jamming, and shows Charlie's parents singing to him together, which he says is what Charlie will need to fight to break thru, instead of remembering his parents awful split because of his accident. I'm willing to give him a couple of weeks as well!
What I Loved This Week:
Charlie can communicate! He has been the heart and narrator of the show and it will be fun to see how he now interacts with his fellow Red Bander's.
They didn't drag out the Kara/Hunter love story. Who knows what will happen with them, but its fun to watch them banter, and hopefully being together won't stop that. I would have hated having to deal with their inevitable coupling for too many weeks.
Ciara Bravo is an actress no matter what her age is. Last week she and Octavia Spencer both put on an acting Master Class, and this week, it was her alone that got to keep it going.
Questions:
Are they going to keep Kenji out of all the important episodes? This one was big, and like I said, there were a lot of people involved. I hope the cast doesn't get too big and squeeze him out.
How long can they make Charlie unable to speak or move? It was a great story device having him be the narrator, and he still will be, but now that he's awake, it loses a little of its appeal. I hope they don't drag this out too long.
