After last week's heart stopping premiere, this episode had a little bit lighter fare. I can't even explain why I enjoyed the field chase so much. It was like a post-apocalyptic Three Stooges sketch. Jesus, you've never been so entertaining.
So we're going to jump ahead a month or two from the trauma that was last week's episode. Carl has recovered nicely and he, Judith, Rick and Michonne seem happy in their little homestead. It's time for Rick and Daryl to go out on a supply run. Their little encounter with Eugene at the gate is damn delightful... oh how I've missed Eugene's unintentional humor. The two set out on a road trip and immediately come upon a barn housing a truck loaded with supplies. After searching an abandoned gas station, they are "bumped" into by a guy named Paul whose nickname is Jesus. Jesus, immediately distracts them and steals the truck. After chasing him for miles, Rick and Daryl are able to recover the truck and leave Jesus behind. But that Jesus fella, he sure is clever, as he has hopped on top of the truck. It all comes to a climax in a big random field filled with chase scenes, driving fast, walker attacks and ending with Jesus saving Daryl, the truck tumbling in the river and Rick and Daryl watching as Jesus finally gets knocked unconscious. And we're back to the recurring question, do we take Jesus back to Alexandria or do we leave him behind. Newly improved and inspired Rick wins out and they take a tied up, still unconscious Jesus back to Alexandria with them. My how things change.
Back home, Michonne notices Spencer creeping out into the woods with a shovel and follows him. Enid and Carl also creep into the woods as they used to, but Enid is a tad more fearful now than she used to be. When they come upon a walker, Enid wants to kill it, but Carl protects it. As Michonne and Spencer are walking, Michonne sees Carl protecting the walker and realizes the walker is Deanna. She realizes THIS is why Spencer came to the woods, to kill his walker mother and bury her properly. Michonne tells Spencer he is part of their family. And back at their happy home, Carl says the same to Michonne. When Rick finally returns home, he and Michonne recount their day like an old married couple. And then, my friends, it finally happens. The moment we've been waiting literally years for now, Michonne and Rick kiss! And believe me... it wasn't about to stop there... and then Jesus appears!
I guess when they opened the episode with "More Than a Feeling," I should have guessed this is where this was headed. And Rick and Michonne definitely looked intimate in the morning in their household as they casually joked about toothpaste and their work day ahead of them. But this was oddly satisfying. Satisfying to the point of, Jessie who? (No offense, Alexandra Breckenridge). And as nice as it was to see a genuine, tender moment, I was most pleased at a Rick/Daryl adventure. These two haven't been together in so long and they were dang near jovial at the prospect of doing what they do best. I was highly amused at their pursuit of Jesus (double meaning) and at the end realizing, that they are still fighting over the same things; do we trust strangers or do we not?
In other news, Carl was being a tad bit reckless, but once we find out why, it was actually very brave. I think Michonne was able to finally see that. Enid, maybe, not so much. I'm glad Maggie reached out to her to try and bring her into the community a bit more, but I feel as though she'll have some more work to do.
Clearly, this Jesus character is leading to something bigger. It was shady that he was all clean and so well trained in fighting walking around with no weapons on him. Could he finally be the link to Negan that we've all been anticipating? Also, please don't kill him right away... beard aside... he's pretty hot!
