It's been a week since the official premiere of SELFIE and the verdict is still out on whether or not it's going to make it. On one side, people love the chemistry between Karen Gillan and John Cho, while others are condemning the show for it's sexist nature. Every show has flaws when it's first starting out, so I think if we just give it some time, SELFIE will settle nicely into ABC's new lineup.
On tonight's episode, entitled "Un-tag my Heart" we learn all about how Eliza feeds off her "haters," because they make her famous (in the Twitterverse, that is). Supposedly having people who hate you online, means you made it. Hmm that's news to me, but carrying on. We then see and hear the main title sequence for the first time. I don't know what song they used for the theme (I tried finding it online but had no luck) but what I do know is that it doesn't match the show at all. A way more obvious choice would be #Selfie by the Chainsmokers, which they used in the first episode. Maybe they're trying to make the show seem less outrageous so it will appeal to a larger audience. Sometimes the title sequence matches perfectly with the show - think HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER or MODERN FAMILY - but sadly, this isn't one of those times.
We learn that the pharmeceudical company that Henry and Eliza both work for is called Kinderkare Pharmeceudicals, which is a hilarious name for a business. Well done, writers! While getting coffee in the breakroom, Henry overhears a bunch of fellow employees basically slutshaming Eliza. One of the employees quips that she's surprised HR hasn't given her a citation for inappropriate work attire, to which another employee answers, "Oh please, she's probably slept with everyone in HR."
While Karen Gillan does look great, I'd have to agree that what she's wearing is a tad inappropriate for work. Henry pulls her away from Freddy, a co-worker who she's been in a "relationship" with for the past few weeks. Henry explains that people are getting a bad impression of her due to the way she acts and dresses, to which she responds that, "We are a lot more casual about sex than you babyboomers," poking fun at Henry's old-fashioned views of relationships and intimacy.
Henry tries to seem cooler by making a smart comeback but it falls flat. Henry asks Eliza a series of questions which makes her realize her "relationship" with Freddy isn't real at all and in fact, as Jamie Foxx would call, a booty-call. While in bed with Freddy, Eliza questions him about the relationship which ends with them taking an "after-sex selfie." I know people are selfie-crazy these days, but really??
After hearing about a party invite that he didn't get due to his lack of a Facebook, Henry decides to bite the bullet and join the 21st century. One of his co-workers asks, "how do you know who from highschool got ugly" which is probably the funniest reason I've heard to get a Facebook. Henry finally bites the bullet and makes a Facebook (in about 3 seconds...I know, crazy!) and ends up getting his first friend request! Too bad it's from his mom. Henry ends up staying up all night watching random videos and taking Buzzfeed quizzes. I'm pretty sure everyone can relate to this, sadly.
Eliza finds Henry in the breakroom and confesses to a very tired Henry, that he was right about her relationship with Freddy. He's ordered her to stop responding to his "sup?" texts and she starts taking risqué selfies, which she swears are for her mom. Seems legit. Henry continues to give her lessons in order to stop Eliza from acting so sexual all the time, and suggests finding a hobby. Once again, Eliza turns to her DIY-ing neighbor, Brynn, who has a bookclub for "adult virgins." She claims that she and Brynn have a lot in common, like reading the book THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME (which incidentally just opened on Broadway), which shocks Brynn.
Back in the office, Henry is still hooked on Facebook, aka "crack" according to Eliza, who facetimes him from Salvation Army where she's shopping for an asexual outfit to wear to the bookclub. Eliza discovers he's on Facebook and warns him not to stalk his exes. Uh oh. That's like telling people not to press the button...of course he's going to do it now! He finds out that one of his exes is married and one just had a baby and he accidentally tags himself as her breastfeeding baby. He starts freaking out because he can't undo it. Hilarious! Eliza shows up at the bookclub looking like a dork (a sexy one though) and starts to blend in with the rest of the bookclub. However, the other girls soon find out that she's only read eight pages of the book and start getting upset when Henry rushes in to Brynn's apartment, which the girls ask if it's a JERRY MAGUIRE moment. It's not...he's there to get Eliza to untag him from the baby picture.
Henry ends up meeting with his ex, Olivia to clean up the tagging mishap and explains that he wasn't thinking about her in that way, just in a "I wonder how she's doing, hope she's doing well." Olivia says she's doing fine and admits that she met a really great guy after she realized Henry would never love her as much as his job. Ouch. They reminisce about the time that Henry had frosted tips, which is hilarious to imagine. He asks her when did everyone he know suddenly get married and have kids, to which Olivia replies, "probably when you were at the office."
Eliza ends up running into Charmonique at Kold Kone Kreamery (play on Cold Stone Creamery, perhaps). Charmonique is cheating on her diet which makes Eliza realize that she has to give into her urges (having sex with Freddy) if she's going to say on a "diet." Eliza gets hit by a smartcar and then falls down a manhole. Don't worry, the irony is not lost on her, she says. Henry checks Facebook and sees that Eliza has uploaded a hospital SELFIE so he rushes over to see her. She's pretty hurt but she's going to be fine. Henry starts to confess that he was worried about her when Freddy walks in. Darn it Freddy, Henry was clearly going to say something sweet! Freddy brought Eliza her charger and thinks that's the reason she hasn't answered his messages. Between last time we saw Freddy and now, it seems like he's changed. He tells Eliza he doesn't want a hookup, but would rather take her home and walk her to the door. Before the episode ends, we find out the crazy world of Facebook was too much for Henry and he ended up deleting his account.
What did you think of the theme song and title sequence? Does Henry have feelings for Eliza? What's going to happen between Freddy and Eliza? Let me know on Twitter and keep watching SELFIE on ABC to find out!
