There are times when we can forget just how diabolical Cyrus Beene can be. Guess what? Tonight was not one of those nights. He set his full scheme in motion involving all the players at his disposal. It is so nice to see him back to these evil, evil ways.
Fitz is getting hot and heavy with new girlfriend, Lillian Forrester (Annabeth Gish) which puts Abby in an unfortunate position of having to regulate him. Fitz, justifiably, is not all that happy about Abby having to have so much knowledge of his personal life. The two fight... a lot, until finally he realizes she is only trying to protect him.
Jake and Liv are still sleeping together. And Liv and Rowan are... fine? Just a normal dad and daughter chillin' in DC. Huck isn't buying it (and neither am I, frankly) as he calls her out for playing along with the devils. Even when Liv assures Huck that neither of them are up to anything, she is a tad skeptical. In flashbacks, she remembers all the times both Rowan and Jake have let her down, to the point of killing friends and family, the basics. She finds out Jake is seeing someone seriously and decides to have Quinn and Huck investigate who this woman is.
Charlie and Quinn plan a romantic weekend together, but instead, Charlie gets called on to babysit a friend's kid. Quinn isn't all that stoked about it, but winds up having a good time and seeing what a great father Charlie may be when the little boy seems to adore him
But most importantly, last week Cyrus focused his obsession on the Governor of Pennsylvania, Francisco Vargas, who he has decided will make an excellent Presidential Candidate as well as Cyrus' ticket out of the Fitzgerald Administration. After having Vargas thoroughly vetted, they find nothing. His only weakness seems to be that nobody knows his name. Working for Cyrus, Tom recruits a man, Wayne, to go into the Governor's office and hold him hostage. In exchange, Tom won't kill Wayne's son. Cyrus plan works as Perd Hapley cuts away from reports of Susan and Mellie's campaigns to cover the hostage crisis. Vargas is eventually shot and tackles Wayne. He is a National hero and now everyone knows his name. To further his already diabolical plan, Cyrus encourages Abby to get Fitz to invite Vargas to the White House for a meet and greet. But that's not all... Wayne's kid? Oh yeah, he's the kid Charlie was watching. Charlie was working for Tom! These damn B-613 people... their loyalty is horrifying.
So much to unpack here. First... I can hardly comment on the David Rosen stuff. He is my favorite character and I always beg for more screen time for Joshua Malina, but he's being despicable and it's making me angry. Okay, one quick comment, is Liz starting to get a tad bit jealous? Does she actually have feelings for David? Does David have feelings for Susan or is he completely dead inside? Never mind, I don't want to talk about it anymore.
Moving on, um... Tom's gay? And isn't Cyrus married? What the what is going on! Okay, so Cyrus has Tom on his payroll (among other things) and Tom hires Charlie... who handled Wayne... it's so incestuous down there in DC. Also, it was clear that Wayne didn't shoot Vargas, right? Tom or someone else did to distract him to give the governor a "shot." #nailedit At this point, the only person I really trust is Huck. At least he can assess just how messed up everyone is.
And since David Rosen is being disgusting, can I, in turn, beg for more screen time for Marcus? His, "Don't mind me, I just work here" line was so appropriate. Give this fella some love, already!
My last two thoughts are these:
