Listen, I know it wasn't the "nicest" tribute, but I, for one, really enjoyed that song. And anytime, they want to have Tony and Grammy Award winning, Steve Kazee sing, even if it is to disparage a Gallagher I am on board with that plan. (No offense, Fiona.)
Yes, after ghosting Gus many months ago, Fiona finally decided it was time to get some closure and apologize to her estranged husband. Fortunately, she's still on the band's mailing list and decides to attend a local show with V. An oddly calm, Gus, asks her to have a seat and proceeds to sing his new song, "The F Word" which stand for Fiona and it's basically his official "eff you." Again... great song!
Frank has invited an entire Mexican family to rent out their yard as they came home and found themselves evicted due to the latest gentrification efforts in the neighborhood. Speaking of, Yanis is now paralyzed from the waist down due to his accident that Kev unwillingly caused. Yanis would like to kill the Lisas who he clearly blames while Kev is wracked with guilt. V convinces him to get over himself and concentrate on the good things in their life.
Carl has found a lucrative business at school selling guns, not only to students, but to teachers as well. He is busy trying to catch the eye of classmate, Dominique, who doesn't believe him that he's African. Meanwhile, Debbie, after finding out that Fiona is also pregnant, becomes excited that they can have kids together. However, Fiona's opinion is that they can get abortions together. Debbie's only support at this point is coming from Frank. Frank educates her on how to take advantage of the welfare system. She and Frank decide to hold an "Interbortion" (trademark pending) for Fiona to try and talk her out of getting an abortion. It backfires and V backs Fiona and everyone else is too busy to care. Debbie makes a final plea for Fiona to support her decision to keep the baby as she did, in fact, plan it. Fiona throws down an ultimatum and tells her if she goes through with it, she'll be out on her own.
And my poor, sweet Ian is turning into kind of a wank. Lip said it all when he pointed out that since he's been diagnosed bipolar, he has accepted that his life is doomed. Between his new job as a garbage man, Lip's professor pointing out that he should not have dropped out of HS and seeing how happy and successful Lip is, Ian kind of loses it. And just when we think he can't hit bottom anymore, Ian witnesses a hit and run and pulls a woman from a burning car and saves her life.
And if things aren't bad enough, Fiona comes home to an eviction notice of her own.
So, a couple things happened here that were incredibly significant to the Gallaghers. One, someone called Fiona out for being a dick. And yes, we love her and she has faults, but she is indeed, a dick. Especially to Gus. And I'm serious, I really dig that song. Second, Lip accurately described Ian's downfall, but also didn't jump in to save him. He stood up for himself and said no. That's huge. Maybe not for Ian, but for Lip it is. At some point, these kids have got to take responsibility for their own lives and Lip did that, as hard as it was for him. He has earned that spot and that space and he has every right to claim it. Third, Fiona grew some balls and threw down an ultimatum to Debbie. She was an actual parent and that may just result in her losing Debbie. And lastly, and more politically, the scene in the cafeteria with Carl and the teachers was hilariously awful. Because it was a subtle, yet not, statement on a fully armed faculty at a school. Well played, SHAMELESS.
Even though, as usual, their lives are in shambles, there were some actual signs of growth in these characters this week. I am most hopeful for Ian, as I always am. Any chance he rescued a billionaire? Or a mentor? Or someone who has the power to pardon Mickey? (There's a chance I'm not 100% sure how the justice system works.)
As for the fertile ones, why do I get the feeling that Debbie will go through with the abortion and Fiona will have hers? Also... what if it's Jimmy's? That is a distinct possibility. I'm equally okay with it being Gus's. Any chance to have either of those two guys as regulars on the show again, let's do this. No offense to you, Sean, get out while you can. With the eviction notice, I'm guessing there's a full blown war about to break out on the South Side.
