After last week's church massacre, we took a giant step sideways and finally found out what Beth's been up to. And as it turns out, training with Daryl Dixon certainly does have its advantages. Beth has kind of turned into a badass.
Beth wakes up in a hospital room ala Rick in the pilot. There were many similarities, in fact, but we quickly see that she is not in an abandon hospital. She is in a working hospital that is run by some pretty bitchy cops. We meet some new characters immediately; Dr. Edwards and Officer Dawn who is apparently running the joint. They have rescued Beth and now, she "owes" them.
Beth is immediately filled in that she has to work off what she owes her rescuers by working in the hospital for a while. It's not your average hospital, but nothing is average anymore. We meet Officer Gorman who takes creepy to a whole new level when stealing Beth's lollipop. We meet Noah, another patient working off his debt, who is working hard to stay on Officer Dawn's good side. Beth learns quickly that when they can't save people, they are disposed of at the bottom of an elevator shaft.
As a new patient is admitted, Dawn insists that he be saved at all costs even against Dr. Edwards wishes. They are able to save him and put him keep him on a monitor. Another patient comes in for emergency after attempting an escape. "Joan" has a walker bite on her arm and the good Doctor is forced to saw it off without anesthesia with some wire. So that was pleasant. Beth meets Noah and he tells her of his plans to escape once he works off his debt. She decides to join him. Their plan is to find the extra key in Dawn's office and escape through the elevator shaft.
Dr. Edwards explains to Beth how they all ended up there and then asks her to give the patient on the monitor some Clozapine. She does so and the patient dies. When Dr. Edwards shows up, he confirms that she gave him Clonazepam. She KNOWS he didn't say that and realizes she was set up. Noah takes the blame for her.
She attempts her escape with Noah and through a terrifying drop through the elevator shaft, they make it out and take on the parking lot walkers. Noah makes it, she does not and is brought back to the hospital by the officers. She tells Dawn that no one is coming for them. Dr. Edwards tells her that the patient was another doctor and if he had lived, Dr. Edwards would've become irrelevant. At the end, Beth has a weapon and looks as if she's ready to attack when a new patient is wheeled in: Carol!!!
It is strange to see an entire episode with nearly a brand new cast. But I guess that's how it would be in the apocalypse; constantly meeting new groups along the way. Beth has certainly learned how to handle herself and has become a small soldier herself. I don't think the walls of this hospital will hold her for long. The new characters of Dawn and Dr. Edwards are formidable adversaries and I hope that we continue to learn more of their back stories. I can only imagine it is the apocalypse that has turned them into these personalities.
This episode was a bit of a breather. Yes, it was intense and satisfying and certainly didn't stray from gore, but it certainly was a little bit easier to take than the past few. I'm not complaining, I like that they go back and forth between massacres and character development. Beth really annoyed me when she was first introduced, but it has been a fascinating arc in watching what she has become. And I think with Carol by her side, this hospital staff better look the hell out!
What I Know:
It's going to be a while before I can enjoy a Sour Apple lollipop again.
I didn't think the show could gross me out more than the recent weeks' barbecues, but the arm sawing sure did come close.
Caravaggio is my favorite painter and "The Denial of St. Peter" is hanging in my bedroom. Fun facts about your recapper.
What I Don't Know:
Did Carol get captured on purpose to infiltrate and find Beth?
Still don't know who Daryl had in the woods with him, but now my money is on Noah.
They have electricity... or do they? Are they on a generator? Or a bunch of battery packs? Did they refer to how and I just missed it?
Lines I Love:
Joan - I guess it's easier to make a deal with the devil when you're not the one paying the price.
Dawn - Some people just aren't meant for this life and that's okay. As long as they don't take advantage of the ones who are.
Dr. Edwards - When they arrested Christ, Peter denied being one of his disciples. He didn't have a choice. They would've crucified him too.
Are the two loves of Daryl Dixon's life now being held at this hospital? We don't know what either of them mean to him, but we know that both of them mean a lot. Follow me on Twitter @eponineq and follow @BWWTVWorld for all the latest updates, scoops and recaps.
