When you have a solid ensemble of six people, chances are, there is always going to be someone without a lot of screen time. This week that prize went to Cece. Everyone has to put in their time, girl, sorry. However, I sure do love it when Coach gets to shine.
Jess has forced Coach into being a Health teacher and to learn more about teaching, she drags him away to a conference. Coach is thrust into the role as buffer between Jess and Ryan (The Brit is Back!) as she wants to keep their relationship professional. Problem is, Ryan is pretty much perfect. Coach realizes quickly with the help of fellow teachers and way underused guest star, Lisa Bonet, that teaching is actually pretty difficult and important. In a drunken binge, he pulls an Almost Famous and wants to jump off the roof into the pool. Jess loses her battle avoiding Ryan and gets paired up with him in sessions where they are forced closer and closer together until he finally rescues Coach and becomes an actual hero. After doing some drinking of their own, Jess confesses to Ryan she has a crush on him and tries to immediately retract her words. Upon saying goodbye, Ryan confesses to Jess that he feels the same, if not more, for her and she kisses him. They bid each other "adieu" until after Thanksgiving break.
Back at the apartment, Nick, Winston and Schmidt are stoked to have one of their famous guy nights. It quickly deteriorates when Schmidt spills wine on Jess' blanket and reveals that he doesn't know how to laundry. It's okay, Winston doesn't know how to read a ruler. Nick teaches the boys these basic skills and they return the favor by counseling Nick on how best to find love.
The Jess and Ryan love story is a bit formulaic. There were a few times that I even guessed their dialogue, but whatever. I mean, obviously this plotline sells on a million sitcoms, so who am I to judge? It didn't give me any less pleasure when Jess kissed Ryan than it did when Jim kissed Pam or Ross kissed Rachel. It works. We accept it. However, NEW GIRL has been known to be more clever. Don't succumb to formula at this point. This season has been way too good.
Any time the boys get in touch with their feelings, I'm so on board. I love those boys, because I know those boys. So desperate to be masculine and yet what they need to work on is their so-called "feminine" side. I'm so glad these boys embraced their feelings and realized just how good the Sangria is.
MVP - Nick, Schmidt and Winston on their Guys Night. Oy. THE best.
Runner Up - Drunk Coach. So enjoyable.
Lines I Love:
Jess - I can't risk learning any personal details about him. What if he taught his dyslexic sister how to read? I can't know that. I'll go crazy with lust. My pants will turn to ash.
Jess - You can't sit there, Coach likes to sit in the middle. Coach - Yup. I sit bitch or I don't sit at all.
Nick - I can't say the alphabet and I never learned how to love. But enough about me: Guys Night!
Coach - Health is the most important subject on Earth. Because you know kids always want to have sex with each other. They don't know that it only feels good for a second and then you're sad.
Jess - Enjoy your Thanksgiving vacation. It's an American holiday where we celebrate the fact that we didn't know how to farm by ourselves.
I'm pleading with the writers to please keep Coach involved in more school activities. That's where he shines! Not that I don't love the apartment life with the fellas, but Coach at school is the Coach we love. And he and Jess working together doesn't get nearly enough screen time. Next week is Thanksgiving and no one does Thanksgiving like NEW GIRL. (Except FRIENDS. And WKRP.)
