The good news is; Rick is alive. The bad news is; no word on Glenn. We didn't actually think that would all get wrapped up tonight, did we? No, the writers are way more diabolical than that.
Back inside the gates at Alexandria, a traumatized town is dealing with the aftermath of the Wolves attack when they see Rick running toward the gate followed by a herd of walkers. Yes, Rick survived. Although I would really like to see how he got himself out of that little pickle. Needless to say, he has to inform the residents of Alexandria that half of the herd of walkers is outside, but they are safe behind the gate for the time being. He assures them that the rest of the group will be back and lead the rest away. Aaron backs him up and tells him what Rick did. Aaron confesses that it was his fault that the wolves attacked. Consenting defeat, the residents raid the pantry knowing that their day of reckoning is soon. Spencer stops them and tells them they still have to have hope. For a sliver of a second, I was on Spencer's side and then back at Deanna's not only was he wasted, but he looted the pantry for himself. And then he turns on his poor mother and blames her for basically everything. Ugh. Freaking Spencer. I mean, Jeez, even if what he said was valid, she wasn't being malicious. She was doing the best she could, Spencer! Deanna, who had been pretty much numb suddenly finds new inspiration and draws up a blueprint of a new Alexandria. On a late night walk, she is attacked by a walker and repeatedly stabs him in the chest, but Rick arrives to kill it properly. She tells Rick that he is the leader, not her. Later Jessie has her own Guy Lombardo moment as she is forced to end Betsy (Dave's wife) who has apparently killed herself. She, too, informs the Alexandria residents that they have to start fighting or they will die. Maybe it means more coming from her.
Maggie decides to go after Glenn after seeing his name put up on a Memorial Wall. Reeling with guilt and feeling protective, Aaron offers to go with her through a secret underground sewer. After being attacked by some truly disgusting sewer walkers, Maggie decides not to go through the final gate because she promised Glenn she would stay safe. Since, you know, she is PREGNANT! She and Aaron realize that have to accept the mistakes they have made and move on to do the best they can. She decides to erase Glenn's name off the memorial. Well, if Maggie can hold out hope for Glenn, I guess we all can too.
Two new romances blossomed as well. Okay, well Rick and Jessie aren't exactly new, but they did manage to have a hearty makeout session after Rick confessed to her that he was worried about Daryl, Sasha, Abraham and Glenn. And Dr. Denise put the moves on Tara after Tara walked her through a low moment in her confidence. As for Jessie's son, Ron, his girlfriend Enid, the sheep in wolves clothing is gone. Carl wants to go after her, but Ron threatens to tell Rick and he does eventually. Anyone else having trouble figuring that kid out? Most importantly, the episode ends with what looks to be a weakness in the wall where it was... bleeding? This is something we should worry about apparently.
I don't think it's necessary to note that this was the slowest episode of the season which is insane, because SO much happened. It's just that the first four were so jam packed with death, destruction, zen, etc. that it was nice to have a breather where we don't have to recover from a brutal death. The biggest news, of course, was Maggie's pregnancy. And they've exhausted the character showing up as a walker, thing, right? Glenn isn't going to pull a Sophia/Merle on us, right? RIGHT? I don't quite know how, but I'm still holding out hope that he's alive. But... it's really starting to look like he's not.
As for Daryl, Abraham and Sasha, the preview for next week shows us that they are still alive. But you never know with the way the timeline has been this year. They also said there are only three more episodes before the winter break. Is that possible? How is this season going by so quickly? Will we even have a resolve to Glenn before the winter break or will they make us suffer the entire holiday season over more than just spending time with family?
Here's a preview of next week's all new episode:
