Here's to second chance!
It's two resurrections for the price of one as Ollie (Stephen Amell) and old friend John Constantine (Matt Ryan from the cancelled series CONSTANTINE) dabble in the supernatural to restore a soul to the resurrected Sara (Caity Lotz) on tonight's ep, 'Haunted.' We've got a quiver full and our eye on the target. We'll get you caught up.
We begin with a recently escaped Sara stopping the sexual assualt of a waitress. She staps one of the guys several times. The waitress thanks her and then she starts to choke the waitress. Cops arrive and Sara bolts.
At Ollie's campaign HQ (he's running for Star City mayor), Thea (Willa Holland) introduces us to the political strategist Alex Davis (Parker Young). He's been hired to make sure they can spin any skeletons that might be in Ollie's past (and after three seasons of flashbacks, Ollie needs a double-wide closet to hold 'em all). He is most concerned with Ollie's friendship with the D.A. Laurel Lance (aka Black Canary, played by Katie Cassidy).
And we have our first flashback. It's the poppy field with forced-labor villagers. Solider presents the backpack with the A.R.G.U.S. computer. Ollie's cover is blown. He's taken to the head boss and plays it all off as absurd: "yeah, I parachuted out of a secret spy plane." Head boss is beating the snot out of someone. The man turns around. It's John Constantine.
Back in the alley, Det. Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne) has finished interviewing the waitress and confronts Laurel with the obvious: the woman who has been on a mini murder spree is Sara. Seems Laurel neglected to tell Dad that Sara escaped.
At Palmer Tech, we learn that Curtis (aka Mr. Terrific, played by Echo Kellum) is a bronze winning Olympian. Even though he's dressed for a gym workout, Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) needs him to analyze the sound file recording from Ray Palmer's final words. Curtis gives it a listen and agrees to dig as there is something else on the recording.
Quentin continues to tango with the devil and meets with Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough). Darhk wants him to break into a federal computer outpost and insert a device.
Ollie takes a break from sparring with Thea to thank her for hiring the political strategist. Seems like he is on the verge of taking the guy's advice re Laurel and Thea is hearing none of it. They've all been friends forever. The discussion is cut short when Felicity radios in that a blonde woman is going crazy at a local night spot.
Black Canary beats them to the scene and is quickly disarmed by Sara. Green ARROW is about to fire a shot and realizes it's Sara (Awkward! Laurel didn't tell Team ARROW about the resurrection). Sara flees.
He confronts both Thea and Laurel back at the compound. They didn't go on a spa weekend, but rather took a trip to the Lazarus Pit and resurrected Sara. Sara's bloodlust is worse than Thea's as Sara was dead for a while and Thea was merely dying before taking the pit bath. He's pissed both because she didn't tell him and she played with forces she shouldn't have.
Flashback 2: Ollie wonders who John Constantine is. The boss wants Ollie to use the map Constantine had on him to find whatever it is the Constantine is there to look for. Constantine casts a quick spell to get himself out of the handcuffs, disarms another soldier and points a gun at Ollie. He's using Ollie as a hostage. He forces Ollie to drive him to wherever he is going.
At the compound, Quentin is freaking out about both Sara and the trojan virus that Darhk has given him to upload to the fed computer. Since Felicity doesn't have time to crack the encryption before Darhk realizes Quentin hasn't done his bidding, they have no choice but to send Quentin on a quest. Since Laurel doesn't know her dad is working for Darhk (albeit with Team ARROW's blessing as there guy on the inside) that leaves Diggle (David Ramsey) to accompany him. One slight problem: Darhk works for H.I.V.E. (the group responsible for the death of Diggle's brother).
Felicity is freaking about Sara's resurrection. Ollie assures her that the world is actually far more complicated than most people want to realize. If only they could figure out the pattern to Sara's madness. Turns out, both of the female targets look like Thea (who is responsible for Sara's death).
Thea is enjoying a big old glass of wine (as she is often wont to do) and ignoring her urgent text from Ollie as Sara leaps in and starts to choke her. Thea runs out of her apartment and down the stairs with Sara in pursuit. Thea kicks open a door and jumps down another flight of stairs. Sara takes the bait and runs out the door.
In the hospital, Thea is pretty banged up after her run in with Sara. She informs Ollie and Felicity about the bloodlust and the fact that her father Merlyn (John Barrowman) served up a couple of henchman that she quickly killed as a way to keep things at bay. Laurel and Ollie go out into the hall and she calls him on his hypocrisy: he used the pit to bring back his sister, so why is he pissed she did the same for hers. Though Sara is going around town killing people, Laurel somehow manages to make it all about her.
Flashback #3: Constantine and Ollie have arrive at their destination. Constantine tells Ollie that the drugs are only part of the group's mission. There are things on the island that shouldn't fall into bad people's hands. Constantine grabs some local fauna, says another spell and leaves swirl around them revealing a trap door.
Diggle and Quentin arrive at the fed data house and plug in Darhk's virus. It's erasing files on people. Just who, they don't know.
Laurel sits at Thea's bedside and, when Thea wakes up, Laurel apologizes. Thea finally comes clean and tells Laurel that she was the one who killed Sara (she was under the influence of drugs Merlyn had given her).
Diggle and Quentin are found. Quentin knocks out Diggle and flashes his badge at security. He tells them to go get backup.
Laurel leaves Thea alone for a second. It's enough for Sara to enter the hospital room. Laurel and Ollie are too focused on continuing their talk to hear Sara choking the life out of Thea in the next room. Ollie finally goes in to check on his sister. Sara throws Thea at Ollie and crashing through the hospital window.
They take Thea to the compound and Ollie tells Laurel that the pit didn't restore Sara's soul. Thea realizes that she and Sara share a mystical bound because they both spend time in the pit. She wants to use herself as bait. Ollie objects, but is overruled by the rest of Team ARROW.
Flashback #4:The trap door has led to a temple. There is writing that Constantine tells Ollie that only the pure of heart enter. He handcuffs Ollie to a nearby torch and enters the main chamber. There is a sceptor with Egyptian writing on it. Ollie has freed himself from the handcuffs as Constantine pulls the sceptor from the stone. Ollie pushes Constantine out of the way of a falling booby trap.
Quentin confronts Darhk about Diggle's brother's record being one of the one's that Darhk erased. Darhk tells him that Diggle's bro was a rival crime lord and the H.I.V.E. had him assasination as a result.
Thea is using her old dance club as the place to draw Sara out. It works. Black Canary gets Thea out of harms way and Diggle and Green ARROW spar with Sara. Sara stops Black Canary. Black Canary is about to put her sister down when Green ARROW shoots a knockout dart at Sara. Ollie tells her there is a way to get Sara's soul back. Ollie then calls in the favor to Constantine.
He arrives at the compound as cocky as ever (how I have missed you, John!). He's done a restoration spell before and tells them it's like riding a bike. He presents a shopping list (in Aramaic) to Felcity. Diggle wants to know what happens if something goes wrong and Constantine replies "We'll all be too dead to care." I wonder again why NBC cancelled his show.
Constantine tells them he only has enough mojo for three of them to go to the other side. So, the trio is Constantine, Ollie and Laurel. Constantine begins the spell and the trio is transported to the otherworld. Zombie assasins are holding Sara in the pit. More are coming in to kill the intruders. Constantine tells Ollie to help Laurel --he can hold the assasin off. He picks up a sword and holds his own (all the while urging Ollie and Laurel to hurry up). He utters a spell, freezing the assasin mid-air and then runs his sword through him. Ollie and Laurel rescue Sara from the pit and their spirits return to the compound. Sara wakes with her soul returned. Constantine flashes a cocky smile.
Constantine tells Ollie they are even. Ollie offers to be available whenever Constantine should need him. Constantine is making a hasty exit as the hairs on the back of his neck have been standing up since he arrived in Star City. Ollie realizes it is probably Damien Darhk. The mere mention of the name causes Constantine to have a concerned look. He tells Ollie to watch his back around Darhk and leave town while he still can. This is a man who has tangoed with the devil and demons on a pretty regular basis. Darhk scares him. Yikes.
Final flashback: Ollie still isn't quite sure what he saw in the temple. Turns out Constantine was after the orb of horus. In the comics, the claw of horus was used by Hawkgirl. Could Constantine be making a visit to either THE FLASH or LEGENDS OF TOMORROW? The door is certainly open.
Ollie tells Constantine he can't come back empty handed. Constantine breaks off the gem atop the orb (essentially, the orb part of the orb of horus). Constantine tells him the sparkly bits aren't what he is after. It's the magic in staff. He plans to keep it locked up in his magic cabin. He demonstrates by removing the tattoo on his arm and transferring it to Ollies six pack abs. It's some sort of protection spell and he tells Ollie he'll know when to use it.
Quentin drops by Diggle's place to give him a classified file Darhk had kept of his brother. He tells Diggle he doesn't have to read it. And so he reads it. He tells Quentin he wanted to know why they had his brother killed and now he knows.
Final moment: Curtis is pounding back the energy drinks (guess it's been an all nighter or two to examine that sound file). Ray's full message: "I'm alive and I'm in trouble."
