Thank you, GREY'S. Because of last night's episode, I now am fully aware that the root canal I've been putting off could lead to both my head and brain exploding.

The hashtag for last night's episode was "Mer's Time to Shine." In Shondaland, sometimes shine requires the potential destruction of marriage. The tension between Meredith and Derek was thick for most of the winter finale, starting when Maggie asked the both of them to consult on a patient (the aforementioned tooth debacle). It was Heart versus Head; an ongoing theme in the series as a whole.

Since POTUS does not like to hear the word "no," he sent a White House Rep to bring Derek back to DC. Derek told her no. After all, he has a family, a (stalled?) career, and now the memory of a job offer in the White House that he gave up for that fall that he must occasionally lord over his wife (depending on who you ask). Having Meredith and Derek on opposite ends of any decision is always edgy, but this time was worse. Unsaid and frequently said feelings were hanging over them and everyone in their general vicinity.

It didn't help when Derek asked Richard for yet another opinion on the case, only to have their agreed decision overridden by Meredith and Maggie; the former who made it very clear that Derek had no power there. Richard's disagreeing with her course of action eventually brought him and Maggie a little closer, though. They made a coffee date. On a far less cordial side, Meredith and Derek's back and forth came to a cataclysmic point in the last few minutes when Derek told her he was done. He was tired of the arguing; he felt that she had been trying to prove that his decision to stay was the wrong one from the beginning. He told her that if she didn't want him, POTUS sure did. And what greater love is there than that of the President of the United States? Ask Olivia Pope.

Meredith was unmoved by his pseudo threat. She told him to go. Are you bluffing, Mer? Are you testing the brightness of your shine? Derek called Debra, the White House Rep, then and there to accept the position. At no point during this exchange were their children mentioned, but who cares about them, right?

Speaking of children, Stephanie got to give April her ultrasound, which was not awkward at ALL. She also accidentally let the sex of the baby slip, which April had only moments before told her that she/Jackson didn't want to know. Though initially annoyed, April eventually got over it. She was actually kind of glad she now knew that her little "Buddha" baby was a boy and planned on telling Jackson. And because she was pregnant and happy, the writers decreed that Stephanie should spot a birth defect in the ultrasound that Dr. Herman pretty much confirmed. Dr. Herman also happened to nonchalantly mention the baby's death sentence and Buddha pose just as Jackson was exiting the elevator, causing him to confront a wide eyed Stephanie.

Now onto dying Dr. Herman, who's got five months to live and plans on getting all the ice cream and org*sms she can get in the meantime. With this new life goal in mind, the only person seemingly bothered by her upcoming death is Arizona. And when you're a doctor and are one of a few people who know about a stubborn person's terrible health, you lie and have that person's personal medical files sent to you. After that, you accidentally let them fall into the hands of an equally nosy doctor, here personified by Amelia (Lady Shepherd).

With little prodding, Amelia got Arizona to tell her that the records were Dr. Herman's and that everyone who needed to know about it, did. Phew, kept that secret, well, a secret. Or so she thought. Amelia plastered an unused room with Herman's x-rays and Arizona flipped when she saw it. She suddenly realized that it wasn't her place to delve into the private lives of grown women, and in the midst of her frantically pulling down the x-rays, Amelia interrupted with the shocking news that she could potentially remove the inoperable, unique butterfly of tumor. TWIST!

Callie and Owen were working with two soldiers, each missing a leg, on the robotic limb project. The two young veterans had been involved in a playful competition to see who would get to try the robot leg first. When Jordan, one of the vets, slips and severely injured himself, Owen blamed Callie for pushing them too hard. Sure Jordan was an adult who chose to try to walk up some steps two seconds after successfully walking a few feet on a robotic limb, but yes, it was Callie's fault. Later Callie tried to get Rick, the other vet, to try the leg and he flipped out on her for trying to use him as a replacement for Jordan. Jordan was his best friend and had always pushed him to be better. He wasn't going to take what was his just because he was trapped in a coma with no end date. He'd try the leg AFTER Jordan did. Callie felt like everything was her fault and wanted to take a break on the robotic limb project, but Owen squashed that idea. He'd been too rough on her. It wasn't her fault. He was overly sensitive to the plights of soldiers and she needed to get Rick back on track, which she did. He walked on the new leg and we all cheered.

Oh yea, Jo was there, too. She was still pissed because Meredith was always in her/Alex's house. Well, Meredith and now Arizona. She whined a bit and then complained to Alex, who basically told her that the house had always been open to him in the past and that wasn't changing. However, he did assure her that Meredith in his bed and Jo in his bed were very different things. She cooed and then they ran off to, I assume, "go to bed." I wonder if they'll wrote Jo an actual plot line at some point. All she does is whine about her boyfriend not eating lunch with her. She's a doctor. Go save someone.

Also, Bailey drank a kale smoothie and admitted it tasted terrible. Her plot was more flushed out than Jo's.

So, what did you think of the winter finale? Will you be on pins and needles until their 2015 return? Tell us in the comments below. See you on January 29th!
