It's a bird, it's a plane, no...it's a girl. Supergirl, that is. There's a new hero coming to your living room Monday nights this fall. SUPERGIRL, the newest DC Comics show, premieres October 26 at 8:30/7:30 C on CBS.
Former GLEE actress Melissa Benoist stars as Supergirl, or Kara Danvers as she's known in the normal world. SUPERGIRL is Superman's older cousin who has grown up on Earth and kept her identity a secret for over twenty years. Her boss, played by Calista Flockhart, is deliciously reminiscent of Miranda Priestly in Devil Wears Prada. Kara, longing for a chance to use her powers instead of simply fetching coffee, is finally given an opportunity when her adoptive sister's plane in in trouble...and thus SUPERGIRL is born.
While Melissa Benoist, Mehcad Brooks, and Calista Flockhart are all certain to be stunning in their roles, I'm more excited about two cast members who are certainly no strangers to BroadwayWorld.com: Jeremy Jordan and Laura Benanti.
Broadway star Laura Benanti, whom you may know from THE SOUND OF MUSIC LIVE! or NASHVILLE, will be in several episodes playing Kara's birth mother. Meanwhile, Jeremy Jordan of Newsies, Bonnie and Clyde, and The Last Five Years fame, will be portraying Winn Schott. Based on the sneak peak (included below!), Winn appears to be a possible love interest of Kara's. I'm not going to lie: Jeremy Jordan being cast in the show is one of the main reasons I'll be watching it.
SUPERGIRL films in Los Angeles and I was lucky enough to visit the Warner Brothers Studios this summer and actually got to see sets for the show being built. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of special effects the show uses especially since the show hinges on Kara's super powers.
