This week, BWW will be asking our readers to predict the winners for the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, airing Sunday, September 22nd (8:00 - 11:00 PM ET / 5:00 - 8:00 PM PT) on CBS. Be sure to visit BroadwayTVWorld for complete live coverage of the broadcast!
Like nearly all of the major acting categories at this year's Emmys, the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series slate is packed with exceptional talent. The group has combined for 24 nominations and Bryan Cranston and Damian Lewis have split four of the last five wins in the category.
Cranston, who is finishing off his incredible run as Walter White on AMC's BREAKIN BAD this season, won for the role three times from 2008-2010. Though Cranston has never appeared on Broadway, he is currently starring in a major production as President Lyndon Johnson at Boston's American Repatory Theatre in ALL THE WAY (check out the pictures). Early rumors are that, like many recent A.R.T. productions (HAIR, PORGY AND BESS), ALL THE WAY might transfer to Broadway in the spring.
The other former winner nominated in the category, HOMELAND's Damian Lewis played Laertes on Broadway in 1995 opposite Ralph Finnes' Hamlet.
Though perhaps known by many for his role as Harry Dunne in the 1994 comedy DUMB AND DUMBER, first-time Emmy nominee Jeff Daniels has an expansive and eclectic history on stage. A Tony nominee in 2009 for Yasmina Reza's GOD OF CARNAGE, Daniels has appeared in nine Off-Broadway and five Broadway shows, garnering three Drama Desk noms in addition to the Tony nod. He also is the founder and Executive Director of the Purple Rose Theatre Company in Chelsea, Michigan. Daniels will be featured in our Stage and Screen Star Series on Friday.
Tony and two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey is also nominated as Majority Whip Frances Underwood on Netflix's HOUSE OF CARDS. He has appeared on Broadway six times (including HURLYBURLY, LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT, LOST IN YONKERS, THE ICEMAN COMETH) and for the last decade has served as the Artistic Director of the Old Vic theatre in London.
