Still a little scarred after FX cancelled one of my favorite television comedies, LEGIT, I was skeptical to check out any new shows. Even though I've been a faithful fan of THE LEAGUE for years, I doubted their decision making after losing such a gem. When I saw the preview for YOU'RE THE WORST, it amused me. But hey, trailers have led to disappointment before. What a delightful surprise.
Here's the trailer: Be warned, there is adult situations and language.
Chris Geere stars as Jimmy, a writer who makes a fool of himself at his ex's wedding during a drunken toast. For some unknown reason, this is greatly appealing to Gretchen, a publicist, played by Aya Cash. They spend the night together, with complications as they share mutual friends, but there is a definite connection. Both of them filled with commitment issues and aversions to responsibility, they begin a relationship of sorts. Jimmy's roommate and best friend, Edgar played by Desmin Borges is a war veteran suffering from PTSD and Aya's best friend, Lindsay (Kether Donohue) is trying to come to terms with her marriage to a wealthy man she is not attracted to. This new age foursome has some great chemistry and find themselves in strange situations. Acting prowess aside, the writing is the real star of this show. The snappy dialogue isn't out of place at all as it is completely believable between intelligent professionals. The sarcasm is impeccably timed and Jimmy's inexplicable hatred for all things popular is so believable, especially in a town called Silver Lake. #localhumor
There are also a barrage of recurring characters including comedienne, Janet Varney as Jimmy's ex-girlfriend, Becca, (and Lindsay's sister) who married one of Jimmy's friends, Paul, Lindsay's poor shlep of a husband and their pre-pubescent neighbor, Killian who is just as lost at 11 as Jimmy is as a grown up.
If you think it looks like the same old thing you're used to seeing, you're wrong, as was I. This new comedy from writer, Stephen Falk, is about as far from traditional as you can get. The main couple come off as vile people, but in all honesty, they're just human. They are all struggling to navigate modern day relationships in this new social media filled world where the old labels simply don't work anymore. None of the episodes are tied up with a neat little bow. It's messy and chaotic and real. And as hilarious and graphic (it's cable, kids, it's not G rated) as it can be, every once in a while some real emotion sneaks through and you find yourself invested in these people. And it's worth it all just to hear Jimmy's rant regarding the real villain of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."
You don't need a Buzzfeed quiz to determine which YOU'RE THE WORST character you'd be, because you could realistically be any of them. OK, maybe not the PTSD guy, but still. The first season came and went quickly, but I highly recommend catching up on it during the upcoming holiday break. There are only 10 episodes and they are available for streaming. The show was recently picked up for a second season along with FX's other new comedy, MARRIED (also a good watch). I can't recommend it highly enough. Let's be honest, there are times when all of us are "the worst," but the show that actually includes that in their title is far from it.
